Can I test my MBP with 1 fan only?

Hey guys.

I have a brand-new 2 months old rMBP 2015 and it is making an annoying noise. Mostly right after wake up or when I start Chrome.

I figured it is either the CPU or one of the fans. I a very dry pop sound, like a knock.

Would I be able to disconnect one fan and test the machine for a few days like that? Or Id fry it all up?

So guys just out of curiosity and in case anyone else ends up with the same weird pop noise coming from the top case, I discovered what was happening. And it wasn't the fan.

I tried disconnecting both fans and the noise wouldn't cease. Then I tried turning the machine on with the bottom open and I realized that the noise came from the heatsink.

It all makes sense now. When the chip gets hot due to Chrome or Photoshop, fans kick in and that's why I thought they were the culprit. However after ruling them out, I tried pressing down a bit on the heatsink only to find out a couple of screws were loose. Both the type that connect the heatsink to the case and the ones that push the springs down the chip. After tightening those out everything seems to be fine. At least for now.

It makes sense the chip would go from cool to hot very fast, thus making the fragile screws+spring vibrate and pop. If the noise comes back though, I have no idea how I'll solve it haha

This is covered under warranty since it is only two months old. Have Apple replace it for free.

UPDATE 5/30/17

Just take the bottom off, unplug one fan and see if it quits making noise. Then try the other one. repairs don't get much easier. Just click on the icon to get to the guides.

I'm not sure how long it would take for them to realize what the problem is. I'm guessing they wouldn't replace the fan without extensive testing? I just can't be without a machine for 4 days. Also I'm terribly worried they might scratch the macbook too :(

Not for a few days. I would suggest removing one and seeing if its the issue. For light loads for maybe 10 minutes to an hour it should be ok but for days, that might do some damage.

Got it.

What are the odds of a noise coming from the CPU though?

da

Very low odds. When you say it is new, what do you mean? Where did you get it? Was it previously used?

da

No, bought it from apple 2 months ago.

da

CPU cant make noise. Its just a chip

da

Sorry, I meant some sort of noise related to increasing heat or maybe current (?) that is generated when the CPU's frequency rises. Would something like that be possible?
