Battery loses full charge in about 90 minutes - new issue

I've got a 3GS running 4.2.1 and it's about 1 year old. I've always had a Mophie Juice Pack on it, and would usually go through both the internal battery and the external in about 16 hours of pretty heavy use, as I would expect...

Then 2 days ago the phone has decided to burn through the internal battery in about 90 minutes, and takes the external battery about the same time to deplete as well. The phone is always warm, and takes about 4 - 5 hours to charge back up.

I've tried restarting, restoring, and removing all apps but the base ones - but nothing has helped.

Is it possible for a battery to die from one day to the next (literally)? Should I replace the battery, or something more?

I'm having the same battery issue, and getting a new battery doesn't help. Mine seems to be lasting longer than yours, but it's draining WAY faster than it used to. Mine, though, charges back up pretty quickly, not slowly. Mine also runs warmer than it used to.

Similar situation with my 3GS. Have replaced the battery but after charging up as normal, charge is lost in less than a day. Battery also gets hot when charging up

Sounds like a bad battery, you can get a new one here, and you can find a step-by-step guide here.

My only question regarding that is based on the fact that the juicepack also chews through the battery like never before - if it were only battery, wouldn't an external power source take the internal battery out of the equation?

I'm not sure with the specifics of a Mophie pack, but it seems to me it's just like any external battery charger, it charges through the battery, all power goes through there, so if your battery's bad, then it doesn't matter if you have a power supply or not

Yes, it is possiblt for the batery to "just keel over" from one moment to the next. But I don't think that yours dies all of a sudden. It is probably just a the end of its lifespan :) that is why it takes longer to charge, does not hold a full charge and your phone is always warm. Unless you had a recent iOS update that everyone noticed would decrease the iPhones performance, I am with rab777hp and suggest a new battery.Good luck

So a little update... I installed a new battery, and everthing went great. Charged it up fully (overnight) and it was showing a full charge this morning (so was the external juice pack).

Unfortunately, no change in battery response - by the 1 hour mark after disconnecting from the charger, I was sitting at 60%, burned through the entire juice pack to get it back to 80%, and within 30 minutes I am currently back at 66%...

So, any ideas on a plan B? I'm at a loss at this point.

Same thing happened to my 3GS after I installed the OS 5.0 update. Now it just shuts down after 15 minutes of use off the charger even though it said 100% when I unplugged it and when it is back on the charger, comes right back up and says 91%, even though the phone turns itself off when that happens. So annoying!

i've got an old iphone 3g, os 4.2.1.

check your sync configuration.

i've not an internet plan, so i usually take advantage of free wifi connections.

my iphon was configured to sync contacts and agenda with google, using "ms exchange" configuration. well, any change to contacts starts something consuming any available cpu power, drains battery and warmup iphone.

removing sync of contacts resolved the issue. warning: this obviously removes contacts from iphone, so consider making a backup before proceeding.
