Replaced screen, phone no longer turning on.

Hi guys,

I've read a lot of threads with regards to my question but each one seems very individual so thought I would make my own and if anyonehere has any wisdom they can help me out with I would massivley appreciate it.

I replaced my screen, it was working perfectly when I tested it, until I pressed the screen down, ended up with x1 black line down the side - So I decided to take it apart andtry again thinking I'd loosened a cable or something.

When I re-connected the screen cables to the phone itself again and decided to test it, the phone will not turn on. It gets VERY hot but no matter what I do will not turn on.

So far I've;

- Disconnected the battery, reconnected it and nothing.

- Disconnected the battery and plugged it into a charger - nothing.

- Plugged it into itunes, which it instantly recognises, but asks for a passcode (Which I cant enter because the screen wont turn on).

This is where I'm at guys, anyone who can help point me in the right direction with some advice I would MASSIVLEY appreciate it!

Hi Nathan. There could be a couple of things going on here.

First, you may just have a defective replacement screen. Do you still have the original cracked screen? If you do, and it still worked despite the cracked glass, then re-install it to see if the problem is with the phone or with the screen.

Always disconnect the battery before you remove the screen and connect it only after you re-install it. Also, keep track of the screws holding down the retaining bracket over the connectors. If you put the wrong one in the wrong place, you will damage your logic board.

If the old screen works, then it is probably a bad replacement screen. If the old screen does the same thing, you may have damaged the backlight circuit on your logic board. In that case:

  • Check the connectors for the LCD and Digitizer (follow this guide) as there may be debris or broken/bent pins.
  • Check the flex cables and their connectors as well.
  • Completely disconnect the screen assembly but leave everything else connected. See if iTunes recognizes your phone and check to see if the logic board is still hot. If not, that indicates a backlight circuit issue.

A backlight circuit issue requires a micro-soldering repair.

Thank you - I think you are correct, Itunes recognises the phone but unfortunatley I cant unlock it to access it! >.<.

Any ideas on a rough price for micro-soldering repair?

Thank you so far

This forum is not intended for solicitation so I will just encourage you to look at my profile and you will find a link to my website which has pricing. @rany, as well as several other contributors here, are excellent micro-solderers.

Forgot to mention the iTunes test indeed..

@nathan101, before concluding that you need microsoldering repair, try a different screen. Be gentle. Remember to always disconnect the battery first.

You either killed your screen (put the old one back to test), or you killed your back light circuit by not unplugging the battery when reseating the screen cables.

It could also be a case of long screw damage to the bottom left screw hole, for the screws that hold the small plate over the screen connectors. But that would happen only if you put those screws back already.

The CPU usually gets very hot during start up, but a short on the back light circuit can also be causing excessive heat.

So start by testing with a new screen or your old one back. If you still have no image, then you should consider taking it to someone who can trouble shoot it at board level. And this time don't forget to disconnect the battery first and plug it back last when testing with a different screen.
