First: Hold "menu + center" then "play + center" when the apple boot logo flashes.
This fixes most if not all conection problems.
Second: Replace the cable with a high quality one.
Third: Right click on the iPod drive, click Properties. Click the Tools tab, then under Error Checking, click Check Now. Select Automactically fix file system errors and then hit start.
