Split Cord Repair; Brother and super glue

I have a gaming PC at my mom's house, with a pair of x12s. My brother noticed that the wiring moves up and down in the headset (as it should, to prevent cord tears) and put a little super glue on the cord where it goes into the headset. Now the wire is starting to tear in this spot. How do I repair?

Okay, here's the root of the problem. Everywhere that the superglue touched, and subsequently the acetone and rubbing alcohol caused the insulation to harden and in some places crystalize. If there is no short, electrical tape will provide a short term solution -- the glue on the tape will eventually fail and become a sticky mess. A better solution is to open the headphone and pull the worn insulation into the housing. Once the casing is opened you should find a couple of small tabs that the wire can be wrapped around or tied around to prevent it from moving back and forth in the housing. Quite frequently the factory ill have tied a knot in the wire just inside the housing. You would be replicating this same knot a little further down on the wire.

If there is a short in the wiring, then the only way to repair it is to shorten it PAST the exposed portion -- typically the short will be in the exposed area, and shortening the wire to that point will only cause you to have to make the same repair twice -- and resolder the wires to the drivers.

Hope this helps

I did what you recommended. Well, mostly. The wiring was shorting out, so I cut it about a half inch below the split. Resoldered etc. Headphones working great now!

zstorm 4 Super Glue has one major weakness. Acetone. Use a small amount of acetone like nail polish remover to dissolve Super Glue from the cable. Clean that off after with some isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol.

Well, that solves getting the super glue out. But what about the cord. The insulation is badly split, some exposed wires.

are those wires exposed and causing a short? If not then you can apply things like electric tape. If they are, you will have to cut the wire, shorten it to the exposed part and resolder it to the headphone. Let us know if you are up to it.
