Fans turn on when using Photoshop. Otherwise they no longer run at all and computer gets too hot. Before this happened the fan was too loud and seemed to run all the time. This is actually an intermittent problem. A few days ago the fan started running again -- quietly the way it used to. But now it has stopped again.

Usually the fan on this model starts making noise when it gets hot and fails. It may have failed to the point that it takes more power to push it to start. You can test this with a multimeter but I feel you're in order for a new fan.
