Water stopped getting dispensed from refrigerator, all of a sudden :(

Samsung - 29.0 Cu. Ft. French Door Refrigerator with Thru-the-Door Ice and Water - Stainless-Steel

Bought this refrigerator couple years back. All is good, until a few hours ago... as water stopped coming out of the dispenser. Recently (about a month ago) changed the water filter (used Samsumg filter) and all was well until today.

  • - Note that water stopped coming out all of a sudden. My wife used it a few minutes ago to get some water... but now no more water comes out of the dispenser.
  • - When I remove the filter, water is getting dispensed at good speed, but when I put back the filter (the same that I was using the last 30 days), water stops.
  • - I bought a different filter and see the same result. Not even sputtering (the thing that usually happens the first few minutes when a new filter gets inserted)... it's like blank.. no water at all.
  • - Can hear the humming sound when the dispenser gets clicked.
  • - No leakage.
  • - All the other lights on the control panel are glowing.
  • - Emptied ice bucket and see that new ice is being made.

Can really use some help here :(

If you look at the water filter there are two o-rings. That's because one is for water going into the filter (the center o-ring) and the other is for the water leaving the filter (outer o-ring). That means there are two spring loaded valves in the filter housing that allow the water to flow through the filter or bypass when there is no filter. For some reason over time one of them doesn't completely open. In my case it was the water flowing out of the filter. I know this because the new filter was full of water when I pulled it back out. I learned from another online forum that you can put a bead of hot glue around both center surface (don't block the hole) and larger surface. This builds up the face of the filter and effectively allows the valves to open wider.

da

Mossimo, can you give me the link to the other forum?

Thanks - I'm having the same problem.

da

Hey Brandi, it actually might have been this forum. I might have written in error. I'm still having trouble with mine where the hot glue doesn't stay on. I'm going to try a 5 minute epoxy next.

da

Screw Samsung and there filter. Just remove filter and replace with a inline filter behind fridge. That's what I did and have no more problems. All Samsung fridges have same problem but they don't care so don't buy their filters.

Water Tube in Door is Frozen

If the refrigerator water dispenser is not working the water supply tube in the door may be frozen. This will be difficult to track down. Look for a connection point at the bottom or top of the door, try removing the hose and blowing air through it and out the dispenser. If air passes through, it's not frozen. If not, thaw it out. and determine where it froze in the door. Most doors are foamed in with a sleeve the water line goes thru to the dispenser. The freezer temp should be kept from 0 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit. If it is too cold the water line in the door may freeze.

Water Inlet Valve

If the water dispenser is not working the water pressure from the house might be too low. Water inlet valves require a minimum of 20 psi to function properly. If the pressure is good and the water filter is good, replace the water inlet valve.

Dispenser Control Board

How it Works:

If the refrigerator water dispenser is not working the dispenser control board might be defective. The control board governs most of the functions of the dispenser system. If only one item of the dispenser system is not working, troubleshoot further to see if the problem is with one of the components in the system. The board is more likely to be the cause of the problem when the entire dispensing system fails.

Dispenser Switch

If the refrigerator water dispenser is not working, one of the dispenser switches might be defective. The dispenser switch is activated by the dispenser actuator. The switch can be checked for continuity with an Ohm meter. If it doesn’t have continuity it should be replaced.

Door Switch

How it Works:

If the refrigerator water dispenser is not working, the door switch might be defective. When the freezer door is opened the freezer door switch does two things, it turns on the light in the freezer and turns off the ice and water dispenser. If the door switch fails the dispenser will not turn on. The switch can be checked for continuity with an Ohm meter. If it doesn’t have continuity it should be replaced.

The tube in the freezer door froze. Adjusted the temperature up to 0F, opened the door for a minute or two. Water came back.

Yep, that's it. The easy and cheap fix is a Water Line Buddy. I got mine at www.waterlinebuddy.com

I’m have the same problem. This happened several months ago but i haven’t had time to check until now. The line is not frozen and i am getting water from the source because i am still getting ice. How do we check the switches

da

I have had this issue for a year and tried everything. I read the comment on here about www.waterlinebuddy.com and figured worth a try. Within 5 mins the ice thawed and I have water. I highly recommend it.

I have a GE Frig where the water and ice stopped being g dispensed. I fooled around with the door switches and found that they were not being depressed enough. So I added a silicone cabinet door bumper to the block that depresses the switch. Works fine now.

Check whether your water hose to the refrigerator has a safety shutoff valve designed to stop water flow if the hose breaks. When I replaced my Samsung refrigerator water filter, apparently that left a void such that water flowed too fast and shut off that safety valve. That fooled me for a while. To reset the valve you have to unscrew it from the water source (with the manual shutoff valve closed, of course). Then reconnect it and turn the manual valve just barely on, to allow a slow flow of water until all the air is out of the system. Then open it all the way.

One other thing that may work and just did for me (for other users finding this now) is that one person can push the dispenser lever while another person turns off then on the main water supply valve behind the fridge- in the wall recess in my case. I guess it primed the system because this was the only way we got it to dispense again. then when I put the filter back in we had to do it a second time to prime once more. Now it is working fine.

I am having a similar issue for the third time with my GE Profile Arctica. We hired a guy who warmed the inside of the freezer door the first time and that made the water flow again. About 8 months later it stopped again. He came out and warmed the inside again, but wound up doing something inside the front door panel and the water came out again. Now, about 4 months later - the water started coming out intermittently, like, sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn’t. I pushed on the black plastic pressure plate and it would come on again. For a moment… The water would suddenly stop before the glass was full. It did that repeatedly. Some days, it didn’t work at all and then suddenly one day it worked. Now, the ice won’t come out of the chute either. I don’t know what to do.

Hello,

I’m having an issue with my GE Fridge water dispenser not dispensing water at all.

Now, first I want to ask, is it normal that when I put the filter in and turn it I hear water pressure going in? And if I try to take it off slowly would make a lot of resistance and once I take it off a burst of water under pressure comes out. Is that normal?

Second I tried to troubleshoot disconnecting the little hose in front of the fridge that goes up to the dispenser and there is no water coming out from there, only a few drops. If I press the lever to dispense water with the hoses disconnected no water comes out of the hose coming from the inlet valve. I hear the sound the humming but nothing happens.

Should I replace the inlet valve? Should the fridge work and dispense water even if the filter is not in? Could that be a filter problem or the connection with the filter inside the fridge instead?

Just want to make sure before I spend money for the inlet valve.

Please help! Thanks!!!

Well it turned out to be the line was frozen .

I disconnected the fridge , opened the door and left it open for 10 minutes … voila , the %#*@ thing started pouring water like no tomorrow , lol...

checked the freezer temp (never done before in 5 years) and it was set at - 3 F, so I raised to 5 F which is the maximum allowed to see how it does . Probably I will lower it later to 3F and will check .

So far so good … fingers crossed !!!

da

As a follow up on the saga of the Samsung water problem , as I stated before , I raised the freezer temp to +5 F and then a bit later I lowered to a final +2 F , which is where it has been for the last 24 hours with the water working perfectly .

So, it will stay at that temp from now on . I now that the manual recommend it at 0 F , but just in case and since the water is working perfectly and the freezer is ok at +2F I will let it at that . Perhaps those 2 degrees of cold make the difference between the water freezing on the tube and working correctly .

Glad it was nothing big and that I saved a ton of money by checking the water tube . Cheers ...

Somewhere none of this seems to be getting through with some of our issues. Water is working fine as long as there is no filter installed. New filters work maybe for a few minutes or even days, then nothing again. Take the filter off, water comes out fine. It’s not the line, and it’s NOT frozen. So if anyone can actually come up with a solution for that, it would be very helpful.

This was terrific I simply turned the thermostat to off and opened the freezer door for a few minutes and it started working again.

Thanks a bunch
