Frequent crashes, lost partition

My girlfriends Win7 machine started acting up lately. Firefox kept crashing, espacially with Flash plugins running (browser games). I ran a bunch full of virus scans with no finds. Hardware seem OK since it runs alright from CD. Harddisk seems also alright, i had it connected to another computer (my Mac ;-)) and could read it straight away. Strange thing is that the drive used to have two partitions where the second one seems to be lost. Most of the Thunderbird mail profile seems to have vanished. But a strange hidden "Linux" partitions appeared instead. Any ideas? A wild rootkit? A really strange virus?? Hope for input of win-experts.

Soluzione Prescelta

Solved! It seemed to be a heat related problem after all. It's pretty hot in Berlin at the moment and a lot of dust accumlated in the machine. After a good clean everything seems fine again. The missing partitions/files are probably an incompability between Windows and OSX, after all i was reading the harddisk on my mac. Thanks for the support, i keep you updated if anything changes.

To be on the safe side i gave my girlfriend a mac, too ;-)

hi karsten, as as you didn't gave her an old tibook..as you know, those pieces are hotter than %@@% (have still 3 of them in parts). and those linux partitions can be restore partitions or in case of sony computers - the XMB partition

Hi, Have you tried using an earlier restore point to see if the problem goes away? If it does I would delete all restore points after the one that works. Failing in that you may be looking at a format and install. Good luck and please let me know how it comes out. Ralph
