My display flashes and then goes black during startup. Also flashes before shutdown. Computer boots up fully. The computer works normally with an external display (except for the fact that the built in display remains black until shutdown, when it flashes a clear screen image for a second or two). Is the display dead or is it the inverter cable or something else?

Is there an easy way to test for that?
Just using an external display to see if the signal is OK there. You could also use a flashlight at a sharp angle to the display to sine it in you should see the faint image of the desktop icons or what ever is open.
