My Mac suddenly quit responding to key presses on the lower half of the keyboard. I replaced the keyboard and triple checked the connections. The problem continues with the new keyboard.
I've tried an external keyboard and it works perfectly.
Anyone run into this problem? Any idea how to repair it?

well , If you replaced the keyboard then It's not a hardware problem , before you do anything try to connect and external USB keyboard and see if everything is fine .If not well it should be some drivers problem

Hello again , sorry I haven't notice that you mentioned that you used a USB external keyboard at first beginning
I've contacted some people who had similar issue , they claimed that is it a Physical hardware issue , try removing the battery then put it back and press it (Don't force it ) completely to the slot housing ....it has 50% chance of restoring the functionality
