new power supply for Apple TV
Where can I purchase a new power supply for the Apple TV. The factory installed power supply failed and I need a new one.

Dear guys,
I created few photos of my repaired AppleTV, however, I didn't document the whole process from the beginning with photos of the original power adapter and how it was disconnected. It was quite straightforward operation to unsolder 6 wires connected to 2 points at original power switching module using iron solder. Below there is a photo with unsoldering points. Well, let's see what I have on the hands. That's how it all looks like after the repair:
You can see that the external power adapter MeanWell P66A-1R1B 5В/8.5A I used as replacement is big enough. Indeed, it's not so easy to find external adapter with such high output currency =7.2A. For needed power around 40W manufacturers usually provide the units with high voltage & low currency, rather than vice versa. May be you will be more lucky to find more compact external adapter with required parameters.
(Originally the power adapter was with 5-pin connector, but I replaced it with simple smaller plug. I purchased it with corresponding plug socket in microelectronics shop.)
From this picture of AppleTV internals you can see the original power switching module is removed. However, power cable connected to the motherboard is left and is reconnected now directly to the power plug socket mounted on the case of AppleTV.
The power cable connected to motherboard socket has 6 wires, 3 blue ones and 3 brown. All brown wires are corresponding to +, while blue ones are ground. So, all brown wires are closed to each other and soldered to + pin of my external power plug socket. All blue wires are closed to each other and soldered to ground connector of the external plug socket.
The next picture shows the unsoldering points at original power switching module.
The mounting of new power plug socket on the border of AppleTV is not tricky, so well you can use any suitable power plug and matching socket you like and can find in the near shops.

sorry I couldn't be of more help. Try writing to www.weloveMacs.com they carry a lot of parts. They are somewhat high but do have obscure items.

Now It's more than month since I've happily fixed my AppleTV replacing its broken internal power supply with external power adapter. It works great and the entire solution looks pretty good.
I purchased common purpose power adapter MeanWell P66A-1R1B 5В/8.5А (~$40) (http://www.megachip.ru/pdf/MW/P66A.pdf) and reconnected power cable between internal AppleTV power supply and motherboard directly to this external power adapter. The broken internal AppleTV power supply was just thrown away. Everything works just fine and stably. Any suitable external power adapter AC/DC with output voltage 5V and currency >=7.2A can be used as replacement.

There's no hard drive in the 2nd gen or later models. They stream.

I've been looking everywhere for a ps with these specs. I'm thinking it's just easier to buy another apple tv on ebay as the only way to obtain the ps.

I contacted Meanwell directly (I didn't provide Apple TV power specs) and they said that P66A-1R1B5B is an invalid model number. The closest model number is P66A-1R1B and that was discontinued a long time ago.
They suggested the GST60A and GST90A series for a replacement.
An Apple 3rd Gen refurb comes with a full 1 yr warranty directly from Apple. $59.00
This article is for the first generation Apple TV.
I can jailbreak the first generation Apple TV. I can also enable the USB jack on the first generation Apple TV so that I can use an external hard drive to play back movies. If the newer Apple TVs could be jailbroken and have their USB jacks enabled for external hard drives I'd be interested. I'd love to move to newer technology but unfortunately Apple just doesn't get it. I don't want to stream.
Looking for a replacement Power Supply unit for Apple TV 4th Gen.
