Can you tell us what system & OS you are using here.

What operating system and cable interface are you using? I've had similar issues using my WD MyPassport with FireWire to the new OS 10.9 Mavericks.

Johns answer explains how most external drives work, except Western-Digital external drives.

Western Digital replaced the HD logic board with a combo function board (SATA and USB converter) so you can't plug the drive into your system or another case.

Western Digital also uses hardware encryption on the external drives so you can't access the files by swapping the case.

When you plug in your HD do you here is making any noise and does the LED light up at all? Did you forget to dismount the drive before disconnecting it? If either is true then there is hope on saving the drive (may not be able to save the data though).

Without knowing your system and OS we can't go forward here.

Dan...when did WD start this? Must be something new.

Someone else had one of these drives, he broke off the USB connector (dropped it) and tried swapping the drive only to find out the drive didn't have your normal HD SATA logic board. He was able to solder on a SATA cheater cord onto the traces (I'm still looking for the IFIXIT question that has the link on how to do this I'll post it here once I find it). As to encryption review the WD web site it's listed there.

Thanks. Frankly...I put a lot of these in businesses, and these details give me a reason to look elsewhere for external drives.

Found a good discussion about the WD encryption here:

Not so fast here John... Hardware encryption is a good thing! Not bad! Yes it can get in the way. Most of your major brand portable HD's now do this. Even USB thumb drives have support for encryption thats tied to your system. Just so were clear here we are 'not' talking about file encryption (which your link intermingles in the discussion).

These units have two parts: the HDD, which is nothing more than a regular HDD with a SATA connector. The second part is a simple SATA-to-USB converter.

And there's a cable, too. Any of the parts can fail.

First, try another USB port, then another cable if you have any reason to think it got damaged. Try another computer if you can.

Beyond that...the device's internal USB converter can fail, and they do, but most often the drive itself is bad. They get dropped, kicked and abused, and the cushioning is bare-minimum.

The only way to troubleshoot this thing is to tear it apart and separate the pieces. But first, call Western Digital support. In my experience they'll honor a warranty if a professional shop takes it apart, and you call them first.

Once it's apart, it's a simple matter to test the drive by attaching it directly to a SATA port or a known-good USB converter.

Thanks Dan, you've given me something to look out for. I'll be researching this a bit further. A native-USB HDD, who'da thunk it?

And what ever happened to eSATA? (a much better choice)

eSATA & FireWire have on the most part died with USB3 showing up ;-{ All hale the new leaders of the pack! ThunderBolt and ePCI ;-}

Sounds like you pulled the USB cable in middle of a read/write. Sadly you'll need to repartition & reformat the disk to use it again. If you have anything important on the drive I would give a disk recovery app a try.

da

Dan, Akbar, you mentioned an disk recovery app that maybe can solve this issue. I have a similar problem with a My Passport 1TB running actually under windows 8.1 (it ran under windows 7, 8 before)

it suddenly stopped working, appears in the devices windows, but fails initializing in disk management. any help?

I already posted a question under these tags

Try this: MS CHKDSK

since there-s no letter assigned, it doesn't chek. it tries the 'L' drive but nothing
