I opened up my Kindle and recharged the battery. It still won't power-up. What to do next? Please advise. Thank you very much in advance.

I have the same issue after changing battery on Kindle 3. Track the cupreit down to the small microswitch the power-on switch slider actuates. It looks like a small cream-coloured square with a black dot. The black dot is actually a little switch leaver. i applied a little switch cleaner to it then blasted it with a can of compressed air and flicked it with a cocktail stick brought on the green LED rather than the Amber LED. The green flashes a few time but then goes out. It seems the permanent solution is to replace the microswitch.

Finally, my 3rd gen kindle stopped working again last month. It did the same as experienced by Marilyn in the previous post. First thought it was the slider, then the battery, attempted soft and hard reboot. All these efforts remained inconclusive. The kindle still turned on for a few seconds ten shut down while the screen remained still. Finally, after having taken it apart and put it back together twice; I concluded that the screen was defective and that it needed to be replaced. After having read a few forums, i think that 3rd gen kindles do a BIT test on powerup, if it finds something wrong, it then shuts off right away.

In conclusion, I deeply regret to inform you that i decided to retire my old kindle as the cost of repair to benefits analysis proved that i should invest in a new device. So i ended up buying a Kindle Paperwhite, it is quite an awesomr upgrade, i am quite happy with it, and i definitely recommend you do the same.

I appear to have experienced the same problem. Thinking that the battery had finally died I bought a new one but alas to no avail. The orange light appears to show that it's charging but that's all and despite following the steps that various experts have published on the net, the screen remains frozen. In short, it's dead Jim. Next step I did exactly as you recommend and bought a paper-white. Good advice.

I had asimilar problem ! It is fixed!... another post explained that there is a micro switch. It is this that is the problem. a little air blowing to get rid of the dust and particulates, then manually switching the microswitch to clear it and hey presto it is working again. I also replaced the battery but this was not the issue. I have seen and read the feedback on the newer kindles. In my view the original kindle keyboard is the best. best for battery life, because you can use head phones to play music/ it has in built speakers for audio books, best as you can use it tostore documents that are not kindle books.. Best beause you do not have to pay over £100 just to get rid of the ads!!!! Best because you do not have to use a bluetooth head set that can ultimately cause damage to your brain. Remembeer you are covered by your original purchase agreement!... Come on Amazon, bring out the amazon kindle keyboard with a couple of improvements - removeable external micro sd card to add 64gb of memory. I ove the buttons and do not need it waterproofed.

I used the air blowing the micro switch a few days ago and it worked for a few days.Than it turned itself off again so I opend the Kindle again and air blowed it again so it works again. See how long it will work this time. Anyway great to have it back for just for a few days because its a great Kindle. Thanks for post MANWITH THE HAT.

My K3 had been in a drawer for 3 years. The battery was completely depleted. After leaving it on the charger for 2-3 days it was still unresponsive. I tried holding the switch in the on position for 15 seconds several times but had no luck. I eventually placed it back on the charger and held the switch in the "ON" position for 10-15 seconds and the light would illuminate amber. A few seconds after releasing the switch the led would fade out. I repeated this process 5-6 times noticing that each time the charging indicator would stay lit a little longer. Eventually it was able to power up long enough to keep charger and works perfectly now.

Thank you so much. I plugged my Kindle in as you suggested (it was fully charged) and used the turn on switch twice. It started from the ‘Amazon Tree’ screen and quickly uploaded all my books - and I have just downloaded my latest purchase. Thanks again, excellent help, especially as I can’t currently locate my original instruction manual.

Have had the same problem in the past where the screen got all screwed up. After removing the back of the Kindle, i noticed the screen connector had come loose, so i pushed the connector back in and the screen resume working properly.

I didn't use my Kindle 3 for over a year and it didn't seem to charge when I plugged it in for several hours. I tried holding the switch in the on position for 15 seconds several times but had no luck, it wasn't charging at all.

I used a fast charger (5V, 2A), and the orange light turned on. After a few minutes, it turned off. I when the charging light turned off, I unplugged it, hold the power slide for some time, and plugged it again. Each time I did that, the light stayed on longer. The light didn't turn on immediately after I plugged it in, it took like a minute to do so.

I did this for 3 days, and on day 4, the empty battery page disappeared and Kindle started! I couldn't believe it, seems like these small loads reborn my kindle. Now, this kindle and its battery are about 7 years old, and the battery clearly is old and worn out. At this time, it lasts about 4 or 5 hours, and I gets "fully charged" (light turns green) after an hour on the fast charger. I'm still charging it twice a day, hoping battery life may still improve a little. I'll probably buy a new battery, but I'm still glad I was able to get it back from death.

Try reinstalling the battery. If that doesn't work, check the power slider.

What do you mean "check the power slider"? My kindle is charged, and it appears to turn on, but after a few seconds it shuts down. The slider appears to be fine. I had problems with it sticking a few a few times, but after I opened up the kindle and then closed it back up, it worked okay for a few weeks. Now, in addition to not turning on, the bottom half of the screen is messed up.

My kindle was my moms she said like 8 years ago the slider light turns on orange, then when I do the 15 seconds hold it doesn’t work. I tried to mess with the reset terminals but it’s almost useless. Should I give up? It won’t even turn on it’s been stuck on the empty battery screen.

I had similar problems with my Kindle. Tried all the solutions above and then some. Soft reset, factory reset, remove the battery, use a different cable, charger. Nothing worked. Any successes were short lived.

This may be idiosyncratic, but my problem appears to have been that the on-off slider switch was out of place and not making sufficient contact to complete the circuit.

When you have the back off the device, look at the slider switch. Within the Kindle, above the switch there’s a small white rectangle with a black piece of soft plastic in the center. When one uses the switch it passes over the rectangle.

Initially I thought the black plastic was dirt or debris, so I tried to brush it off.

Then I noticed the orange charging light was on. (Kindle was hooked up to my laptop).

I pushed down on the white rectangle.

The device fully charged, though I don’t think the battery was depleted.

Since then my Kindle has worked flawlessly.

It is a micro switch. Over time it must have become worn. I suppose 10 years and one would expect this. Once I put my reading glasses on I could see it. I air jetted it and then tried again.-orange light for 14 seconds then off. Tried pressing down - no Joy. Tried switching the micro switch manually- Success !- orange light charging. No screen. Finally after a few minutes, suddenly the screen came on! but this was the charging screen, showing 50% charge. Success!!!. I also think it is a capacity issue and a wifi download that was overwriting memory. I have been able to move files to pc and this has freed space. Thank you for pointing out the micro-switch issue. I had bought a new battery but believe that this was not the issue. I will replace the new battery with the old battery to confirm. The Kindle Keyboard is the best kindle. I would never buy one of the new ones. Too much control is removed from the user on these newer models. They also use too much energy. If Amazon Kindle cared about the planet then they would be encouraging people to keep their kindles and not upgrade - unless their old kindle was going to someone else to be used.

WARNING!!! Be careful NOT to overcharge your Kindle 3!!!!!

I was following the guidance on this forum… and while it might work…. I happened to open the back of mine, and by chance…. I found the battery on my Kindle 3 had swollen up! Overcharging a Kindle (or any Lithium battery) will cause it to swell up and with persistence, it’s likely to set on fire and explode! A chemical burn/fire is no joke as the it can’t be put with water and so you have to bear the pain of letting it burns itself out on your skin. Nasty stuff!

I went on eBay and bought a brand new battery for £15 including postage. I really hope this reaches someone trying to fix their Kindle 3 and possibly save them! Be careful guys!!!!

Dear all! I'm very happy i have fixed my 3rd generation kindle after a lot of work. I'll list the things I did, although I can't guarantee the order the it took place in making it working again, or even if they were all really necessary.. however it's fixed!

First the biggest symptom: my kindle won't charge. When I plug it to charge, the orange light comes up for a few seconds and then turn off, without changing the screen. Hours and hours plugged in have not worked, always the same with the orange light on for a few seconds then off. My first conclusion was the battery has gone. I bought a new one, and opened my kindle for the first time in life to change it. For my misfortune even after it the problem still.

I must have opened my kindle 3x times after that trying to find something I did wrong. With no explanation it got back working in one of these times, but after a few days without use the problem returned. Today, after taking a lot of attention to the insider mechanisms of the slider which we use to turn on, I noted there was a chip (like a little processor chip) that was not placed well. Looking your kindle from the backside, it's in the bottom left, just a bit up and left from the on/off slider. There is a golden flat cable very near the place we force to open the kindle background. This flat cable plugs to this "processor" and this piece was loose. I just pressed it, headed a click, and noticed that my kindle got on! :))))

So as another colleagues have said it seems kindle do a test when getting on and if anything is wrong it goes off. So if you are facing this issue, check with a lot of attention each part of it after opening. Any loose or damaged piece, anything that seems to be wrong cause probable this is the reason. Of course I'm not sure with my original battery was another part of the problem and really needed to be changed, and I'm not in the mood to change it again to check kkkk.. anyway, I hope my story can help anyone with this problem to reach the solution!! Cheers!!

Well, this sucks. I have found NO answers for what’s happening to my kindle. Recently, we opened it up and ripped the screen cable but fixed that. Now, my power slider does not work! When I slide it, there is no light but it was working early yesterday, but then just stopped. I really don’t want to open up the kindle as I’m worried that I might damage the screen cable AGAIN. It was brought brand new when it was released (my parents gave it to me) so I think that’s why. If anyone could help, it would be much appreciated. As for this comment, try getting a new battery and/or getting a new charging port (if you can). Also try checking the connections inside but if you can’t get it to work, I don’t know what to do next.

The power slider operates a very small microswitch I've discovered this afternoon and a little switch cleaner and then a blast from a can of compressed air could give you a temporary fix but I'm now trying to track down a replacement switch
