Hi i have a samsung top load washing machine.

The machine washes normally until the last 18min or 20min before finishing. It stops in rinse mode too. And then it will not function agian and turns off if we try to repress the preset buttons.

The 5 most common part(s) or condition(s) which contribute to the symptom Washer stops mid cycle are listed below:

Lid Switch Assembly

If the washer stops mid cycle the lid switch assembly might be defective. This is a very common problem. The lid switch assembly can fail either mechanically or electrically. Test any electrical switches with an Ohm meter for continuity. The switches should have continuity according to their design.

Door Lock Motor and Switch Assembly

If the washer stops mid cycle the door lock assembly should be checked. The door lock can fail either mechanically or electrically. Test any switches on the door lock with an Ohm meter. The switches should have continuity according to their design.

Water Inlet Valve

If the washer stops mid cycle the water inlet valve cold water side may have failed. Most washers have a cold water rinse and so if they can't fill with cold water they just sit indefinitely waiting for the cold water to enter. If there is cold water to the water inlet valve and the cold water works in other parts of the cycle - or to make warm water - the valve is not the problem.

Main Control Board

If the washer stops mid-cycle the main control board might be defective. This is not common. Check other causes first such as the lid or door switch and other components.

Timer

If the washer stops mid cycle the timer might be defective. This part is often misdiagnosed, check other components before replacing this timer.

@Brenda Young

What is the make and model number of your washer?

If it has a timer dial can you manually advance the dial a step or two to see if the machine starts to agitate?

Further to Mayer's very well informed suggestions, may I add a suggestion of my own? I am not familiar with this type of machine in the UK, but if it has a motor that employs brushes, I should check that the brushes are not worn down, do not have broken or weak springs, and are not sticking in the guides. A new set of brushes can remedy a lot of obscure faults for relatively little cost.

I had this problem. The washer would stop at the rinse cycle and I found that the issue was that the extrusion that contacted the lid switch mechanically was broken at the tip. Thus, the switch was not fully depressed. I added material to the actuator and the washer resumed with the lid closed. An easy way to test this is to try and depress the switch with a screwdriver or other long tool. If it starts, then this is likely your problem.

This fixed the issue for me as well. The rubber bumper around the pin that hits the lid switch had spun and the high spot was keeping the pin from hitting the switch. I twisted the bumper back to how it had worn in and the machine spun right up.

I love free. five second fixes.

Hi @nahida ,

If you are saying that the washing machine blows the power fuse (or the circuit breaker) and that the washing machine is new, then the machine is faulty and needs to be fixed.

Disconnect it from the power

It should be covered by the manufacturer's product warranty. Check the warranty statement that is usually found in the User guide that came with the machine.

Contact the manufacturer's customer service section (or the retailer that you bought it from) and get it replaced or repaired under warranty.

Hi Sarah Oliver,

Post your question as a "new" question on ifixit.

That way it will receive more attention than as an "answer' on an old thread started 5 years ago.

Give relevant details such as make and full model number and a brief description of the problem, for example since the machine model is not known yet, "..put my washing machine on at 40..." may not mean much to anybody trying to help you. What do you mean by this?

Sometimes the plug in the power-point oxidises and not enough current runs through it.

This can happen on many appliances tv's and computers , just removing and reinserting the plug in the socket may solve it.

If not, try running a cold cycle to see if it still does it,if not, then it may be the heater.

I'm not too sure about washing machines, but often if the main panel still turns on and some lights flash , the flashing sequence may indicate the origin of the problem .Some electronic machines with screens may even indicate a number representing an error code and just like the flashing light ,may pinpoint to the origin of the problem.

For identifying the code, one needs at least to have the make and type of machine, ie front loader , dishwasher, etc and a quick search online may be a quick way of finding the likely problem .

Good luck

I had the same problem - it simple to fix! The plug was not fully in the socket It caused the RCD to trip & the machine to turn off & back on randomly - must have been at that critical point that any vibration would cause either no contact / contact

Great post and advice by Mayer. I live out of town and one of my tenants reported this issue with the coin-op washing machine. According to my tenant, the repair guy claims it was the water valve (assuming he meant the water inlet valve). Hopefully the repair did the trick!

Once again I was reminded to use the old resource K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid).

After switching out timers and other parts with other machines I noticed someone had turned off the cold water valve.

Hi,

Try disconnecting the power from the machine for about 5 minutes and then reconnect the power to see if this resets it.

I am going to add a symptom: when the washer stops (50-60 min) the start light begins to flash, and when the start button is pushed again the cycle completes (another 10-15 min). This does not sound like it could be caused by the common answers.

If a machine is unable to drain/pump out at any point in a wash cycle…it will stop….check the drain-pump filter ;-)
