What causes the loss of sound problem on the MacBook Air?

Recently had my MacBook Air rev A hinge fixed at Apple Store in the UK and they fixed the loss of sound problem by replacing audio board and cable.

Its known that the hinge problem in early MBA models was a design issue that Apple now fix but does anyone know what causes the loss of sound problem and why its a hardware fix please?

Also, given that both are now fixed, is this now a permanent solution in both cases please?

Finally, why is there no statement on the hardware fix for loss of sound on MacBook Air, like there is for the hinge problem please?

Thanks!

I noticed you never got an answer to this. Are you still having this problem?

To leave my testimony, in 2009 I had my 2008's revA MBA hinge fixed, and now again in 2011, so it is a recurrent problem. Worse than that, Apple fixes it outside the original warranty by giving users an 1year extended warranty (just for the hinge), but if the problem reappears later on they will not take charge.

My sound is now gone as well, after the recent fix.

Potential fix In some cases, this issue can be resolved by clearing audio caches. This can be easily accomplished with a tool like OnyX.

In other cases, resetting PRAM/NVRAM can resolve the issue. In order to reset PRAM/NVRAM, shut down your Mac, then start it back up while immediately holding the following keys: Command, Option, P and R. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the third time.

In still other cases, this issue can only be resolved via authorized Apple repair. Contact Apple support or bring your MacBook Air to a local Apple retail store for assistance.

The same thing happened to me. A one of the posters (Mayer) suggested take it to an apple store first before taking apart your laptop. I did the complete opposite and bought everything from Ifixit.com. I fixed it myself with no problem, but the problem happened again when all the hinges broke.

So my suggestion is let the apple store do a diagnosis. You may get everything fixed for free. If you read some of my other posts regarding my Macbook Air hinge problems almost every single thing was replaced and it looks / works like the day I bought it.

Good luck

I just encountered this problem having previously resolved audio issues via the OS I needed to replace the audio cable this time. Easy enough fix if you're willing, took about 20 minutes once I had the part.

I examined the cable I replaced and could see nothing obvious although I did note that the cable doesn't quite sit as nicely as I would have liked, it is possible this will cause stress to the cable over time and the problem will reoccur. But given that I have has the machine since it was first launched (I forget exactly when that was) it doesn't worry me too much.

If the switch inside the headphone port is staying on, there is a workaround that I've discovered. Take an old pair of headphones and cut the wire just above the male connector that gets inserted into the port, and insert the jack into the sound port. Open up System Preferences and go to Sound. Under the Output tab, click to highlight "Internal Speakers". At the bottom of the preference pane where it says "Use audio port for", change the drop down to read "Sound Input". This will force the sound to come out of your built in laptop speakers. Note that this will disable your built-in mic, so this solution will not work if you need to use Skype or any other application that requires your mic and speakers to function at the same time.

I had 'sound issues' with a previous MacBook Air and rather than suffer the bother/cost, I bought a newer model 2 years ago and now have the same sound issues. The symptom is an iratic static or crackling sound. This can happen too during the Apple sound when turning on. It seems to be exascerbated or worsened when it gets warm, as in during streaming a movie. I suspect there is a flaw with the sound card cable - my older Mac lost all function at the headphone port. I have tried everything I can in terms of software fixes - resetting the sound card, resetting the PRAM and even reformatting from back-up HD using TimeMachine - nothing has worked. So, I'm taking it to an Apple Store today for diagnosis and repair - sadly it is out of warranty now; however, I feel strongly the this is an issue which Apple knows full well about and there should be a recall issued.

Did you get a response or answer from Apple?

We have MacBook Airs throughout our college campus and the crackly sound makes it very difficult to correctly hear.

I had that problem after a forced shutdown while the system was delaying to boot in restore mode (Command +R). After that, I had no internal speakers, built-in nor startup chime.

After some days trying every step I found in the Internet I was decided to change the sound board.

The computer was left all the night doing backup and in the morning without realizing it was sleeping I forced shutdown accidentally by pressing the on button too long. Surprisingly after reboot the chime came up again.

So there is my doubt. A forced shutdown may cause a system fail to no recognize the internal audio board?
