This isn't exactly repair related but I know which thread this comes from of course.

Any easy way to test this is just make a partition and install SL.

Yeah, many people online have done it. In theory I see nothing wrong with it, I have never heard of apple to do something as stupid as not letting people do clean installs with an install disk.

I did many full installs with the 29$ dvd (ok, 25€ single license and 34€ family license).

the "problem" with the update dvd is simple - it's a retail dvd (thats whats printed on the box) - so what to do - retail is retail.

i installed the dvd's on different machines, some of them were actually mac's - the rest were hackintoshes (asus eee, sony vaio p, a digital engine and so on). i prefer the setup with an usb stick, faster and didn't get scratches.

and btw - this is a repair related issue - it simply makes no sense to install the "old" one first and replace it after the fresh install with snow kitty

Yeah that's just common sense, some people think for some random reason that it doesn't have the full OS on it. How the heck would you reinstall then!

da

maybe they think that you have to make an appointment with the genius bar, pay a lot of money and the genius takes care of it - thats why they call them genius (LOL)

My god, i could rant for hours on how they are such "genii"

oh come on, you're only jealous about their fancy shirts (just kiddin ;-))

I could try it with an external firewire drive on a Intel processor machine. Would that count? Can we be investigative with this one? This is something we may need to know and worth checking out co-operatively. Next try a 10.4 to 10.6 upgrade and co-operatively post the results? Thanks for the question lemerise. We might be able to work together. Stranger things have happened.

Yes, it is possible with the Snow Leopard DVD. What you need to do is shut the computer down, press C or the Option key to boot into the boot menu. You will see the DVD there. Once it loads, you can wipe the drive with Disk Utility as normal under Utilities and it will install on a blank drive no problem.

I'm not sure Apple intended this to be the case, though. Just be aware of that, and you will lose the iLife suite. If you don't have it backed up, just go to Apple and have them reload it at the Genius Bar, or download a ISO for it.
