If you experiencing problems listed in the troubleshooting guide, you can replace the hard drive. The hard drive stores the operating system (Chrome OS), along with saved files and pictures. Installing a new hard drive will require reinstalling Chrome OS and backing up your local files.

If I replace the chrome os Hard drive with one that has a Linux distro already installed will the linux work normally or is there something built in to stop it.
It's something I do with an old dell I use for checking out distros.

I guess it's too late to answer this question now, but C710 is not IBM PC-compatible so standard linux distros do not run normally on it without any modifications.
You can flash a IBM PC-compatible bootloader(coreboot+SEABIOS) on it to run other linux distros.

Any suggested source for getting the 4 Gb RAM upgrade? Does this RAM have a model number?

What is the hard drive called, or it's specific name, so that I may search around for a replacement, before taking my laptop apart?
Mine is a Seagate ST320L T020

Attempted to upgrade my C710 with the:
PNY XLR8 SATA 120GB 6Gbps 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive SSD9SC120GMDF-RB
Didn't fit.
Unfortunately, one corner of the SSD --near the SATA-connector-- interferes with a screw on the motherboard/chassis. And then the laptop cover cannot be re-attached.
Hope this comment saves someone some grief.

Seems its still not clear what brand/size of SSD that you can upgrade to? 60GB? 120? 480?

Bootable flash drive did not get the C710 working until I reseated the HDD. Never would have known about the hidden screw unless I read this,

Unit requesting recovery even after carrying out the listed procedure,tried to upgrade to a 128 ssd but won,t, reinstalled hhd after viewing folders on another computer and the unit finally booted again into chrome screen. Would still like to install ssd drive
I had the hardware error : 0x48 No device found. The acer CustomerSupport asked me to take the chrome book to the hardware repair shop for checking the drive, which might be faulty. I just read the steps mentioned in this article can opened the back panel of the chrome book. Just checked the HD cable connection to the motherboard, just unplugged it and put it back. That's it and the chrome book is working fine now, I didn't need the recovery USB too. Thank you for posting this article on the chrome book
My hdd was “missing.” I did this and replugged in the ribbon. Now my computer is back.
Umm how do I re-install the OS when the drive is broken?
