Background and Identification
A tissue processor is a device used in a histopathology lab that prepares tissue samples, ”for sectioning and microscopic examination in the diagnostic laboratory.” (Steemit) In order to analyze tissue, it must be prepared and the tissue processor does this automatically. There are several steps that the device goes through in order to achieve a quality outcome. They are as follows:
- Tissue is placed in tissue cassettes and placed in the oscillating tissue basket
- Fixation, which is the process of preserving tissues by passing them through chemicals called fixatives.
- Dehydration, is the process of removing water from the tissues with alcohols.
- Clearing, is the process of removing alcohols from the tissue with chemicals called clearing agents.
- Infiltration is the process of intracellular spaces in the tissue with paraffin wax. The result is a more rigid structure to the processed tissue.
- The last step is Embedding which is done manually. The processed tissue is immersed in a mould containing liquid paraffin wax. This gives the tissue support for the process of microtomy which is when the tissue is sliced extremely thin.
