Background and Identification
Panasonic Viera is the company’s product line of flat screen and panel televisions. According to the Panasonic support website, the name ‘Viera’ comes from ‘Visual Era.’ Panasonic was founded in 1918 by Konosuke Matsushita and started off as a company selling lamp sockets. In 1979, Panasonic began producing televisions for the U.S. market and eventually expanded into the European market as well. Along with LCD televisions, Panasonic became one of the leading brands in plasma televisions.
Although a dominant and quality producer of televisions, the Panasonic company quietly pulled out of the U.S. television market in 2016. Panasonic directed many of their efforts to increase the market for plasma televisions, but due to the rising technologies and preferences for the LCD televisions, Panasonic stopped and ended production of plasma televisions in 2014. Panasonic is also looking to end the production of LCD televisions later in 2021.
Currently, Panasonic still sells various television models on their website. Users have reported that some U.S. brick and mortar/wholesale retailers like Best Buy and Costco may still be carrying Panasonic televisions.
