Background Information
CRUX, a lightweight x86-64 Linux distribution, is designed for experienced users. It’s delivered in a tar.gz-based package system with BSD-style initscripts and isn’t based on any other Linux distribution. CRUX also uses a ports system for installing and upgrading applications.
Despite its name, “CRUX” has no specific meaning. Lidén chose it because it sounded cool and ends in “X,” like other Unix flavors such as Mac OS X.
The installation process is manual and involves booting the kernel from a CD or diskette, partitioning the hard disk, creating file systems, mounting the CD or NFS share, compiling a new kernel, and installing a bootloader, all through shell commands.
CRUX uses a package management system similar to BSD-based operating systems. Packages consist of a Pkgfile (a shell script), patches, md5sum hashes for file integrity verification, and a footprint file listing included files.
The development of CRUX was heavily influenced by the development of Arch Linux.
