Background and Identification

Brother printers are manufactured by Japanese company Brother Industries, Ltd., originally founded as Yasui Sewing Machine Co.

In 1971, Brother released their first printer, the M-101 dot-matrix printer, as a collaboration with printer company Centronics. Brother introduced the company’s first laser printer in 1987, and two years later, their first label printer hit the market, the Brother P-touch. In 1995, Brother released their first black-and-white All-in-One laser printer, the Brother MFC-4500ML. This device included a printer, scanner, copier, and fax machine. A decade later, in 2005, Brother created their first color All-in-One laser printer, the Brother MFC-9420CN. The same year, they launched an inkjet garment printer, the Brother GT-541, which enabled users to print images onto fabric.

As of summer 2020, Brother offers printers for personal and professional use, including laser printers, inkjet printers, All-in-One printers, mobile printers, thermal printers, and handheld printers. Their printers offer a variety of features at a range of price points. For example, the Brother MFC-J497DW All-in-One retails for $79.99 and includes a paper capacity of 100 sheets, prints with black ink up to 12 PPM (pages per minute), and prints with color ink up to 6 PPM. On the flip side, the Brother MFC-L6800DW is priced at $649.99, includes a paper tray with a 520-sheet capacity and can print and copy up to 48 PPM.
