Background and Identification
The second generation of the Toyota 4Runner, also called the Hilux Surf in Japan, was produced for the model years 1990-1995 and was the last generation of the 4Runner to be considered a compact SUV. The 4Runner was available with either a 2.4 L I4 or a 3.0 L V6 in the US, but also had diesel options available in Japan. The engines were mated with either a rear wheel drivetrain or a 4wd drivetrain. The engine and drivetrain combos could be further diversified by the option of either a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission.
This generation of 4Runner saw a few small cosmetic alterations through out its lifetime. For example, the majority of 4Runners produced were 4-doors, but a 2-door version was available from 1990 to 1993 and in 1992 the headlights were changed from rectangular sealed beams to modular headlamps.
