Is it possible to change ONLY the Glass?

Hi,

I'd like to know if it is possible to exchange the top glass of the Galaxy Nexus i9250. The screen on my device is working OK. Only the glass has cracked. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks .

To clearify my question:

I would like to use only a product like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/All-New-Outer-Sc...

That costs only 34$ instead of needing to exchange the entire screen + digitizer for a much higher cost (http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-OEM-Samsung-...). Thanks

yes you can replace just the glass which is LCD screen or also known as digitizer. you can buy the LCD screen on websites easily by looking up the model and could look up the teardown for it if you are willing to do the repair yourself.

To the edit post for the OP don't buy the cheap 34$ screen. First its only the screen (just a piece of glass its not actually a screen) its not connected to the connectors and this is a very professional repair which is a high risk on breaking it while you try to connect it. I do these repairs daily and I would not attempt it. Just buy the real LCD digi which is the 2nd link and get a professional to do the repair for you.

Thanks for your insight Azmar!

Yes I have successfully done this repair. I actually did it just last week in the shop. Just youtube the teardowns. Go from cell phone back housing to the front of the phone is the way you need to start. When taking it apart keep a reminder of screws, FLEX CABLES ( dont rip any), and a good tool is to use a guitar pick if you want to get inside the phone.

Always remind yourself of where the flex cables are and when you get the combo screen off, just be careful when putting everything together. This is not a beginner repair and good luck.

For the adhesive im not too sure what I use its some type of double sided adhesive that is very strong. its 1/4 and has an outer brown layer on it is the best way I can describe it.

I think you can.

I also think it's pretty easy, but you need to be really really careful.

I tried using the method xicotorro posted above, this one.

Seems the gnex glass is connected the same way.

Tips:

  • Heat the whole glass, this way the glass wont put much pressure on certain spots on the screen.
  • Use a really really thin and preferably long plastic object. I tried using a guitar pick and it was too thick.
  • Let the air bubbles do the work.
  • Always keep in mind making sure there is extremly little pressure on the screen.
  • Do not try to bend the glass up using the screen as leverage. Really. This might sound trivial, but thats how I broke the screen. (Maybe I'm just stupid)
  • Underneath the screen, theres a tape-like thingy. Make sure not to affect this in anyway. (I don't know why, but it seems important)
  • The edges are good insertion points for the plastic thingy.

Disclaimer:

I broke my screen. Apparantly the screen isnt very elastic. : )

Anyone in the Oslo, Norway area who happens to have a spare phone?

I've tried this myself on the Galaxy Nexus i9250. Unless you have done something like this before you have 0% chance of this working out.

If you do then:

  • Start at the top end near the speaker to lift the first bit up. This is by far the hardest part. Do not start at the bottom where the glass is the thinkest as you risk lifting off the gitizer (another layer of glass that sits between the surface glass and the LCD.
  • The top near the speaker is the thinnest part of the glass. Start at the edge.
  • If you crack a bit off then I would still work my way down, I didn't and lifted most off the phone off before realising that I cracked the digitizer underneath
  • Heat the surface slowly touching it with your fingers so it's not too hot otherwise you will burn the digitizer and it will go from black to baby shite green
  • The glue is on the whole digitizer (the glass underneath the glass) so you need to slowly etch the top layer off - I would heat just the top bit until you get something undernearth to lift and then heat the whole thing

Good luck...

Omigod, what a pile of nearly UNBELIEVABLE bullshit of momentous proportion, if I didn't know better I'd believe this person doesn't really believe that but just threw it in because he likes being a $@$*-disturber. This repair is like anything else: read, read, read, learn, learn, learn. YES it's &&^&^$^ VERY doable if you go about it right, meaning you invest some time in learning everything you can about it, first, and then second, go about it slowly and carefully... again, like anything else. If you do that and get good at it (practice on a couple of old, cracked devices, whose contacts are up, whether yours or someone else's) you can even turn it into a side-business, as I did, even if just in your home town . . . there's a HUGE demand for it and nowhere near enough supply, probably in part because some people are busy telling everyone they have no chance of succeeding. Don't believe them for one goddam second.

Only attempt it if you are very good with a heat gun.

Thanks! Have you personally tried to do this? Was it successful? What adhesive is needed to glue the new glass onto the frame?

Replacement of outer glass on mobile phone in Cape Town instead of entire LCD screen - costs less!

You can find the glue on Amazon. Its Liquid Optical Clear Adhesive. Its called LOCA.

These repairs are a challenge because of the adhesive. You need a UV light to cure the adhesive when you reassemble.

Try a guitar strong along with a heat gun to separate rt he glass from the LCD.

It takes patience... Don't rush the seperation of the glass from the LCD.

Good luck!

Don't do it.. The glass is way to sticky and will crack everything underneath it when you try. Lesson learned.

no, its best to just buy the lcd&digitizer (cheapest i found was 80 or so on ebay)

that repair is not too bad if you just keep track of the screws which isnt hard (there are 7 in total) and refer to the teardown. I have done this replacement about three times and can tear the phone down with my eyes closed

Yes, you can replace only front glass. Because its not connected to phone's touch screen glass. Its separated from inside screen. you can buy front glass online at amazaon.com
