If your HP EliteBook 840 G4 hangs a few minutes after startup, even after changing the RAM and hard disk, the issue is likely related to overheating, power delivery, BIOS settings, or a motherboard failure. Here are some things to check:

1. Check for Overheating Issues

If the laptop gets hot quickly before freezing, it might be a thermal issue.

Try entering the BIOS (press F10 at startup) and check if it still hangs. If it does, it's likely hardware-related.

Clean the cooling fan and heatsink and reapply thermal paste to the CPU.

Run a hardware diagnostic (press F2 at startup and select "System Diagnostics").

---

2. Run in Safe Mode (Check for Software Issues)

If the issue happens only in Windows, try booting in Safe Mode:

1. Restart and press F8 or Shift + F8 repeatedly before Windows loads.

2. Select Safe Mode and see if the laptop still hangs.

3. If it works fine in Safe Mode, the problem might be a driver conflict or malware.

3. Update BIOS & Drivers

If the BIOS is outdated, update it from the HP support website (use another PC to download).

Try booting into Windows without internet, in case a faulty update is causing issues.

4. Check Power Supply & Battery

Try running the laptop without the battery, using only the power adapter.

If it works fine without the battery, the battery may be faulty.

5. Check Motherboard & Internal Components

A faulty power circuit or capacitor on the motherboard can cause freezing.

If none of the above works, the motherboard might need repair or replacement.

What to Try Next?

1. Run hardware diagnostics (F2 at startup) and check for errors.

2. Check cooling system (dust, thermal paste, fan).

3. Test in Safe Mode to rule out software issues.

4. Try running without the battery.

5. Update BIOS and drivers.
