How can I fix horizontal lines on my Philips screen?

I have a Philips 58PUS8545/12. It is about 2.5 or 3 years old.

Just a month or two after warranty expired, I started getting display freezes of one part of the image. The bottom part. Here’s a video for reference.

This issue came and went. But it was starting to get really annoying with increased frequency of occurrence.

I spoke to an electrician store, he told me that this is a common problem with newer Philips TVs, and that the T-CON board needs replacing. However, since they don’t sell these parts individually here, he advised me to just buy a new tv.

I looked up the t-con board model (CCPD-TC575-009 v1.0) and I found it on eBay. I ordered one and when I tried it (using the new connector cables they provided), it didn’t work. I thought it was hopeless. However, a couple of weeks or so later, I thought I’d try again, and this time I used the old original cables. To my surprise, it worked!

The screen wasn’t frozen any longer, however, there were horizontal lines in the same area where it used to freeze. These lines came briefly and went, but a couple of days later and they completely went away!

Fast forward to a month or two later, the lines came back, but this time they stayed and they never left my display since. Here’s another video for reference.

I checked the left and right cables connected to the board. The problem is definitely coming from the right side, as when only the left cable is connected, the half-image looks perfect (apart from the color being slightly dull), but when only the right cable is connected, the lines are back.

Interesting note is that when I tried connecting the board one time, I did it with the right cable being the other way around than it originally was. I thought this shouldn’t matter, but there was no image whatsoever then. The image returned (with the lines) when I inverted the right cable again.

Can you please help me fix this?

Thanks very much for taking the time to read my post, and sorry for the long explanation.

Update: here are photos of the three main boards on the back

Hi, my philips LED TV 65 inches is wall mounted. Must i remove from the wall to do this checking of the ribbon? Thanks

da

@mogana hey! Unfortunately, it’s a must to unmount the tv in order to unscrew the back side and uncover the cables. Unless you have Mr. Fantastic flexibility and especially maneuverable tools that fit and operate through crack openings, there’s no other way

i bought a new tcon board but the same vertical lines no picture

@samershaheen sorry but this was never a T-con board issue. Horizontal lines are never a T-CON board issue by those are a Panel issue (Gate Driver COF) Your T-con board isn't smart enough to cause this. What you have is a driver board issue. Quick reminder, never cross connect the cables. Same with the cable ends. It only goes in one way. You either loose connection or you are going to shorten out one of the driver boards. Also, the Left side is NOT a mirror of the Right side. You will shorten something out.

Try this again. Disconnect your power cord. Disconnect the Right Ribbon cable from the board where it terminates on, after the T-con board (that is your driver board (buffer board). Reconnect the power cable and turn your TV on. What do you get (specifics)

Next turn the power off, disconnect your power cord. Reconnect the Right ribbon cable. Disconnect the Left ribbon cable. Reconnect the power cable and turn your TV on. What do you get (specifics)

Once you are done with that. Take a picture of all the boards. (Focused and large) and post those with your Question. That way we can see what you see.

Hi @oldturkey03, thanks for your input!

Post is updated with photos!

If it wasn’t the tcon board, how do you explain the image freeze problem completely being resolved by replacing it, and the lines problem going away for a good month or two?

I suspect what you say be true, and the lcd panel itself might have a short. I’ve been trying to locate the clock signal pins on the board so that I block them with tape and test, but I have no clue where they are. I don’t have the right instruments to test voltage.

In any case, I did what you told me. When the right ribbon cable is disconnected from the display board and the left cable is connected then the tv is plugged in and turned on, the right half of the image is bright white and the left half is completely normal and blemish free.

However, when the right cable is connected and the left one is not, then the left half of the image is white and the right half is playing the start up logo and animations but with horizontal lines across the entire screen.

@samershaheen the issue is with your right driver board. those are the long skinny boards that are connected to the LCD. You know that this is a panel issue since it is bright white. Now, You can go ahead and try a tape off and see if that changes anything. We need to try to block the row signals. Something like this video or this one (Lots of Blah, Blah, blah,) but it'll give you an idea.

I have seen issues like the original ones on your TV, related to the memory. I have seen slow motion caused by a bad T-con board. That is usually caused by missing (or low VGH) but I only experienced that across the whole display, not broken in half like yours. I'd be interested to hear if you have "CKV" datalines on your T-con and the driver board. Those are the Gate driver lines.

da

@samershaheen I just checked the T-con board image. The data lines to tape of for the Right board oare on the connector that is shown at the top on your image (the one that has the VCOM_R testpoint. the data lines start where the white tape ends. you can tell because those are the thinner traces. The thick phones are power.

da

@oldturkey03 I tried taping the pins on the ribbon cable connected to the right panel. I used your tips about the thinner lines, and thankfully it helped a lot.

I couldn’t get the picture perfect even after a lot of experimenting with which pins to cover. In the end I settled with taping over two pins which I thought gave me the best image and called it a success.

There are still very unnoticeable horizontal lines that can only be seen up close to the screen, but not visible from normal watching distance.

The color on the right side of the tv (left from the viewer’s perspective) is a bit dull compared to the other side of the tv, and certain color contrasts are a bit patchy and not too smooth, like certain light reflections in some scenes.

Finally, very bottom of the image has a strip of horizontal lines, but it doesn’t ruin viewing experience too much.

All in all, it’s far from 100% fix and I expect it won’t last more than few months, but acceptable for now.

Thanks for your help!

@samershaheen Thise tape-off's have about an 80% success rate. Ultimately it just bypasses the broken circuit and receives the signal from somewhere else. I still suspect that there are issues with your GATE drivers who are responsible for the horizontal lines. Those are more difficult to fix etc. Sometimes it's okay to leave well enough alone, if you are okay with the result. It may not be perfect but perfect is the enemy of good :-)

Ok bad news, based off the fact that you put in in upside down could mean that you bent the pins inside the connector, if you could, take a microscope or anything like it and look at the pins of the connector, if anything is bent you can try to bend it back with a very fine pair of tweezers but be careful to bend it back correctly or break it off.

Hi @hampter, thank you for your response. No I don’t think I put it “upside down”, but rather, I reversed the connections. As in, the end that originally connected to the tcon board was instead connected to the panel, and vice versa.

I thought these cables worked either way, same way an hdmi cable can work if you know what I mean.

@samershaheen oh my bad for getting it wrong however my original line of thought still stands
