My laptop fell out of my backpack yesterday onto the ground. (ouch) anyway, my display no longer works, but i can see very faint images, very faint. i can hook up to an external monitor. it's almost as if a light went out. any suggestions as to what the problem might be as well as the cure would be greatly appreciated.

You most likely need a new inverter, from your descriptions, there's just no backlight.
However, you may want to open it up with the guide first and check that everything's connected.

Is there a way to tell if the inverter is bad vs. the backlight/LCD? And is it possible to replace just the backlight or is all one unit with the LCD?
A bad inverter will cause there to be no backlight.
