How do I mount more HDDs on my old gaming PC?

Hi all,

Not too long ago, I decommissioned a PC I built in 2021. It had an Rtx 3080 TI (currently not in the system as I'm reusing it in a custom cooling loop), an AMD Ryzen 9 5900x cooled by an h150i elite cappelix (might consider replacing it), 32GB of DDR4 3600MHZ vengeance RAM, A 970 evo plus, and an ASUS Crosshair VIII Hero (AM4). This is all in a Corsair 5000x case btw. I plan to Reuse this as a homelabs-style plex server to host games on or a NAS. My main problem is that I want to mount more than 2 HDDs on this thing, would that be possible? If not, what are some other ways I can add some more storage for this thing?

@arandomhitman why not just run en external HDD enclosure. You can get those for 4 and more and it allows you to use a variety of drives etc. They have their own power supply, some are even hot-swappable and you can get those for relatively little money. Something like this (example only) seems to provide plenty of storage possibilities without to much fuss

I'd prefer to get stuff internally so I wouldn't have a mess outside, but fair enough. I'll consider it, thank you for your time and answer.

@arandomhitman I agree. Keeping it all in one case keeps it neat and tidy. Only issue is it'll get heavy, crowded and awfully hot since it'll be using a lot of power :-) Remember those old tower cases with 4 5.25 bays? There was enough room in those to fit at least 6 drives but they were the size of a NY apartment.

Hey there,

Adding two more HHDs to your machine should be easy enough. Based on what I found on your specific case, there should be enough room to add either 2 x 3.5" storage drives, or 4 x 2.5" drives. The only thing that you are going to want to double-check is that your power supply has enough power.

Best of luck to you

Thanks for the answer,

Would it be possible for me to mount more HDDS somewhere? I know it's an unconventional move, but Id rather not switch cases. If not I'd just settle for a couple of 870 evo SATA SSDS.

da

@arandomhitman Yes, the case you listed in your specs should have a bay for internal HHDs.

da

Let me rephrase that: Would it be possible to mount MORE than two HDDs in the 5000x? I know it's unconventional, but I want to know if it's possible at all.

da

@arandomhitman Oh, I gotcha. Yes, it is possible as long as the HHDs are 2.5" drives.

da

I do apologize, im a bit new to the whole drive sizing scheme. Would I be able to mount 4 WD purple HDDS? if not that's fine, as ill go with 3 870 evo SATA SSDS and a couple of old barracuda HDDS I have.
