MacOS Install via USB Installer on MacBook Pro with damaged display

I have a mid-2014 MacBook Pro 15" (Retina) with a damaged internal display. I use this system in clamshell mode as my primary desktop (it has fast i7 cpu, 16GB RAM, and 1 TB SSD, so it's super-capable). I have an external LG 27" HD display connected via HDMI cable to my Mac. I also have external MagicMouse and Magic Keyboard for this desktop config.

Now, I need to re-install a clean MacOS. The latest supported version for this system is Big Sur v11.7.9, so I have that MacOS installer on a USB thumb drive, per Apple Support.

So, to use the installer, I power-on the MBP while holding the Option (Alt) key. But this boot mode does not display anything on my external display. If I boot using Command-R (or its corollary key-combos), I get the Restore menu and Disk Utility, but Restore menu does not support installing MacOS from the USB drive.

How do I boot from the USB drive MacOS Installer and get this boot mode to display on my external HD display??

Update (02/24/24)

PS: A new OEM internal MBP display for this model runs over $500, so repairing that issue is not a feasible option.

Using the Startup key Option (⌥) or Alt would normally get you a menu to then select the boot drive from a list using the arrow keys of the keyboard.

So while you can’t see the list we know it’s there! So if you click on the down arrow one time you know you will get the next drive (the external in this case). Then hit the return key to accept it. That should work with your bootable OS installer plugged in.

@danj, This makes perfect sense. I'm fairly certain this will select the USB Installer drive, and select that as the boot drive. But then what? Does the boot-to-install (Mojave) sequence begin, and will that sequence be visible? I guess I'll have to try it flying blind. Next comment will have my after-action update!

@jtyler2gator - Once started you should be able to go into clamshell mode getting the external working with external keyboard & mouse.

If not there’s a few YouTube’s on doing the OS install which you can help you see the steps.
