MacBook with FileVault does not erase the disk.

Guys, my friend has this MacBook, when trying to erase the disk "Apple SSD" this message appears: "a writable disk is required. (-69772)"

It has FileVault activated, even if you enter the correct encryption password it won't let you install macOS or erase the disk. It does not display any disk drives.

Has anyone had this problem?

It sounds like you’re hitting the shoe cobbler's conundrum!

You walk into the cobblers store telling him your shoes heel has come off! What does he asks you to do? Of coarse take the shoe off so he can fix it.

This is the same predicament you are facing here. You need to setup a bootable external drive to boot up your system. Then you can use it to format the internal drive.

@danj Hello, I've already tried this, I installed Catalina on an external hard drive, but the same error occurs when trying to erase the internal disk, even with the correct FileVault password.

da

@danj It is currently without a system, when trying to access the internal disk a folder with a question mark appears.

@ramonferre18311 - I think you’ll need to visit an Apple Store or authorized reseller with some techs.

Quick question: have you formatted the drive with Disk Utility or Terminal?

Quite often! What is your real question?

da

@danj - I am trying to figure out how Disk Utility nor Terminal could erase it. Generally when a disk is encrypted, disk utility can break open that encryption, and then format the drive. I agree with what you say, you should do this from a USB drive, or even Internet Recovery. Fortunately, I have access to this same MacBook model, and I will see if I can figure out a solution.

@jadonlyon - There are some hidden partitions that can mess you up! The M series have an extra one.
