Why is my PS3 Super Slim fan spinning at max speed and overheating

So here's the problem. I bought a PS3 Super Slim used.

When I brought it home, I plugged it in and it worked. Popped in a copy of Batman Arkham City GOTY edition and it was working fine. Then after a few minutes I unplugged it after turning it off and I inspected the PS3, and I noticed it was dusty af (no surprise). At the bottom I notice rust from the slots. Following a PS3 Super Slim teardown/disassembly tutorial I disassembled it upto the motherboard and the fan. Dunno if I can post pics of the inside of the PS3 but it was disgustingly full of dust bunnies. Cleaned the fan with dry Q-tips and dusted off everything without damaging a component. I put it back all together and I turn it on, everything seemed fine at first, booted into XMB and after a few seconds the fan speed started to ramp up to max like a jet taking off (literally). While I'm still on the XMB I foolishly decided to pop in my Batman disc and when I arrive at the start screen I got an (the PS3 is too hot) message and then it shuts off.

Opened it back up again, checked for any dust inside the fan and the fins (the metal ones). It was clean. Even tried resetting the PS3 to no avail. Researching online I find that maybe the thermal paste needs replacing so I ordered some Arctic MX-4 paste. Haven't checked the condition of the paste from the PS3 yet. Any solutions would be appreciated 🙏

I agree with you that it's probably the paste. And if not that it might be the heat sink not properly contacting the CPU. To my knowledge it couldn't be anything else but don't take that as a fact. Hope your playing Batman soon.

@Corban maybe it is exactly what you're saying

But after booting it up I noticed the fan is spinning so fast that it's making like a grinding noise or smth. I have video footage of it but I dunno how to upload it cause I'm new here

@pranavchunnoo It wouldn't hurt to replace the fan. Its like 10$ on ebay.

Update: turns out it's a loose heatsink screw (if that's what it's called)

I copied this post from Reddit which is 3 years old

Here is the post: (user: quasar501) Hello, i recently bought a second hand super slim and the fan was making some loud noise after minutes turned on, so i have cleaned it and aplied a new thermal paste. The same fan noise again. I opened again and noticed something. There is a piece with a screw on top of the board, which press the heatpipe down to the RSX. The problem is, the metal piece where the screw goes do not stay all the way down, there is a gap, feels like it wasn't applying enough pressure to the RSX, making the heatsink a bit loose too. Now i'm thinking this can make the RSX overheat and that's why the fan kicks too soon

Exactly my problem. Now, how do I fix it? (LOL)

The solution was: to tighten the screws for the heatpipe for the RSX down if you have dissassembled it after getting this issue. There are 2 screws; both are near the fan near the fins when you remove the PSU. You have to tighten it back up again after doing like a repaste or cleaning etc. There is a bump between the two screws; that ensures that the connection between the heatpipe and the thermal paste is fully in contact with the RSX.
