The iPod Seventh Generation, marketed and sold as the "iPod Classic", was released in September 2009, and did not have any visible differences compared to the previous version. It simply replaced the previous 120GB iPod Classic 6.5 with a thin 160GB version.

iPod Classic A1238 continually restarts

I replaced my 160gb hard drive in iPod classic because the original hard drive was defective. Now the iPod continually reboots. It starts up to the Apple logo and within a few seconds shuts down and restarts. Never ending. I was able to get the iPod into disc mode and connected it to my computer. The computer sees the iPod but iTunes does not. I can read the contents of the hard drive through file explorer. What else can I try?

@xhonda1200 you are not saying but I assume it stays on in disk mode while connected to your computer. does it stay on when you keep it in diskmode but disconnect from your computer. If it turns off as well, replace the battery. If it does not, you may need to reinstall the firmware. Let us know the exact model of your iPod. Looks like you can still DL it from sites like this

Make sure you backup your HDD. After all, you never know. After downloading the desired firmware below, you can shift-click (PC) or option-click (Mac) the Restore or Update buttons in iTunes. A file dialog will open and let you choose the downloaded ipsw-file. Hope this helps, good luck.

The iPod stays in disk mode while connected to the computer. In the beginning it would say do not disconnect indefinitely, now is says ok to disconnect within a few seconds and then the computer does not see it any more. iTunes never sees the iPod so I cannot restore or update. And how would I be able to reinstall the firmware if the computer and iTunes do not see the iPod?

@xhonda1200 does it stay on in diskmode when you disconnect it from the computer?

Which version iTunes do you use? iTunes may not recognize it in diskmode.
