After Sonoma upgrade random shut downs, RAM failing according to Apple

I installed some 32 RAM into my 2018 MAC MINI it randomly shuts down often after Sonoma Upgrade. Apple says the RAM keeps failing is this a common occurrence?

Hello, did you do the following PRAM & SMC resets on changing internal parts?

Lots of others saying the exact same thing about osX Sonoma 14.1.x

It can’t hurt to reset things but RAM is a bit different. If the system was already working with the RAM and only the OS was updated. It’s more likely the OS or the RAM is more activity accessed under the newer OS, which implies a bad SO-DIMM or RAM which is on the edge of running do to its specs.

This gets into what we call RAS & CAS values (Row/Column Strobe) which is the signaling one uses to read and write the given memory cell. Some RAM at the larger sizes had issues which only shows up when both banks are populated.

I did the PRAM Reset and factory restored the machine but I am hearing something about the problem being associated with the new OS and the T2 chip in the MAC Mini.

@danj so should I only run it with one DIMM at a time in order to diagnose the problem, because iFixit is offering a refund as they claim to be out of 32GB DIMM kit in 16GB x2 configuration.

@seann67262 - Yes, that is what I would do to see if one SO-DIMM is bad. If you don't encounter a failure with just one SO-DIMM that points to the RAS/CAS issue.

To be clear, I'm just a volunteer here helping people, I can't speak for the store.

If you still have the original RAM I would pop it in to see if they work, otherwise pull one SO-DIMM out to see if the problem is within one Vs the other and swapping them around. If both fail then the RAMs specs need to be verified. Clearly if one fails that module is bad.

Let us know what you discover.

I plugged in the original RAM and it runs as normal (but slow, 8GB in 2023 is unacceptable even in 2018) The problem literally started the day after upgrading to the new OS even a downgrade did not help.
