How can I extend the Bluetooth Antenna on a Mac Pro 2023?

Hello,

How can i extend the Bluetooth Antenna on a Mac Pro 2023?
The Mac Pro lives in a closet; so it has some difficulty to maintain connection to Bluetooth mouse / keyboard 5 meters away.
Opened up the Mac Pro 2023, but didn't find where the antenna is located / connected to the mainboard.
If i could find a connector for the Bluetooth antenna i might be able to try an aftermarket Bluetooth antenna.
Thank you, Peter

This is Bluetooth 5.3 that operates on 2.4Ghz frequency the range is 240m in theory, however this doesn’t take into account that everyone’s surroundings is different.

I would use a Bluetooth repeater ,

I would look for a standard Bluetooth 5.3 repeater and use this as you are repeating point to another point ( hence extending the signal further).

Bluetooth requirements for mouse and keyboard is standard bluetooth.

Hope this helps

Hello, thank you for your answer!

Yes i already thought about using a repeater. But my web search for Bluetooth repeaters wasn't very fruitful. Most of the devices were for Bluetooth audio. Could you give me a hint / know a good quality device?

Often times we blame the far end device for the failure instead of the local device in your case the keyboard and mouse. The system side is not your issue it’s the limits of your keyboard and mouse as there signal is not as strong.

Depending on what your door and walls are made with they can attenuate the signal reducing the distance in addition there can be a lot of radio noise which interferes with your given signals in your surroundings. Like other computers and TV and radio devices which are leaking into the BT bands.

A simple BT repeater is all you will need placing it closer to the system in line of sight where you are using your keyboard and mouse. Any BT repeater will work here as long as it matches your keyboard and mouse needs. Review the spec sheet of the keyboard and mouse to figure out what you need. The system doesn’t need to be altered to address the limits you placed on it.

Thank you four your answer.

To be more clear, my setup is for a music studio where the Mac is placed closely to audio interfaces which are a bit noisy themselfes. That's why the main Mac needs to live in a closet.

Could you suggest any specific BT repeater? It's for a Apple Mouse / Keyboard and/or a third party "Editor's Keys" BT keyboard.

@borfi - Sorry I haven’t needed to extend my systems to that extreme so I don’t know of any off the top of my head.

You talk about EMI noise with your other devices. This is starting to sound more like a basic grounding issue. I would review the buildings physical ground as well as the circuits in use in your studio space.

I’m sure you’ve encountered power cords which where warm to the touch as the power racing down friction causes the wires to heat up, just like your toaster heats your bread in the morning which is what I’m doing now 😋

Well… we often forget EMI faces the same dilemma! Either forgetting the grounds or not sizing the pathway adequately or just not making sure it’s healthy!

Get an outlet tester to check the outlets from the wall points at least and if you can get someone who understands EMI noise issues to help you lock things down in the studio.

Basically see if you can get your poor Mac Pro out of the closet! Unless your lines to it dictate it’s placement. You may need to physically bond the equipment racks and your system to a secondary ground if you can’t address the buildings wiring.

In the mean time I’ll see what I can find with my pro customers if they have any ideas. Hang tight it maybe a few days before I get word.

Hi Dan

thank you for your reply.

EMI is surely a thing; as we have lots of different equipment in the studio. Our grounding should be well done.

i guess the issue is that there's also a patchbay (lots of metal) directly in line of sight between Mac and bluetooth devices.

I'd appreciate a hint on what repeaters would be available or on how to "mesh" the BT network with another BT device to bridge the gap.

It would be very unpractical to move the DAW to another location.

Thank you

Peter

@borfi - Here’s a thought, can you use another Mac using remote access via WiFI or even a wired Ethernet connection. You don’t need anything that’s overly powerful. WiFI offers a much stronger signal and more options. Bluetooth was intended as a short distance wireless service, yes I get it we aren’t really doing something that wild here in distance, just a heavy metal 🤘 place! Or too noisy from a radio perspective, which I still think is the issue see if you can rent a RF Handheld Spectrum Analyzer I managed to catchup with one audio Pro who suggested that as he too faced EMI issues.
