Can I convert my 4.2 volt hand drill to use 5v or 12v DIRECTLY?

I have a 4.2 volt drill and the battery life is really annoying so can i replace battery with a 5 volt soldered input to directly power the drill, or could i use 12 volt to directly power the drill. Which one is more safe? Id like to challenge myself with this project. Are there any limitations. I just want it to work. i.e. : my device does not exist on ifixit site so ill attach an image.

The risk of using a 12v battery on a 4.2v small electric screwdriver may result in premature burnout of the motor from over voltage and current. Not advisable as this can shorten its life. Using a 5v source from a battery is safer and allows longer life as an external power source. Three 1.5 volt batteries adds up to 4.5 volts. A little higher if using rechargeable batteries. The physical size of batteries determines how long the power lasts.

To use 5vdc all you need to do is connect the battery and drill away. All battery device will usually handle as much as 3 VDC more than they are rated. As far as 12 vdc you will need to drop the voltage and the easiest way to do the is hard wire a cigarette lighter to cell phone adaptor inline between the battery and your device. I personally have modified the connections on many of my 18 VDC and some 14 VDC devices to connect to a 24 VDC pack I .ade and so far so good.
