Just finished fixing a similar problem with my daughter-in-law's Dyson where the problem turned out to be a worn-out belt that was stretched out enough that it couldn't provide enough tension to keep the belt turning under any kind of resistance whatsoever.

What make and model is your carpet cleaner? We may be able to give you better directions if we know what you're working with, but for now check the belt or belts to see if they're tight. If not, it's likely time to replace it.
