Phone won't charge, but USB port is able to transfer data to PC

Hi! I have an old Samsung Galaxy J7. Since about three years I've been charging it only thru the USB cable connected to my PC, as I was sharing Wi-Fi to my PC which gave me more stable connections than my wireless adapters.

About 6 months ago my PC started having PSU problems. There would be rare and sudden PC restarts over the course of a few months. It was getting worse, so one day I decided to stop using the PC to avoid damaging other hardware. Next day I used the phone all day and connected it to a normal charger when I came home at night. It charged so slowly. Only about 10% in 8 hours. It got worse that same day, to the point it won't charge at all. The phone was connected to the PC when all those restarts happened – maybe the PSU damaged something on the phone? I was then unable to keep testing, as the battery drained completely.

I tried different chargers, cables, and outlets; tried cleaning the port; but nothing. The phone says it's charging once you connect a cable, but it doesn't. Recently I bought a universal charger to charge the battery, since it's removable. The battery charges very slow on it, like 12 hours to reach 100%, but the phone works nice and the battery drains normally. I connect the phone to the PC (I have a brand-new PSU now) thru the USB port and it is able to transfer data! But it still won't charge at all. Zero. It will in fact keep draining normally, even with normal chargers. Any ideas?

Hi @zwjna,

What is the model number of the phone e.g. sm-xxxx as there are a few different variations of a J7 and they're not all the same?

Have you tried a different charger? A more powerful one. Also you open the battery cover and check if the battery is in a good condition

da

@jayeff Thanks for the comment! It's SM-J700m.

@alenortiz Thanks for the comment! Yep, tried all the chargers I have, which should be the same or more powerful than the one that came with the phone. As of the condition of the battery, it is good according to some apps.

I guess your best option is back up your data and do a factory reset, maybe flashing it with Odín with the newest software available for it

Hi @zwjna

If it isn't the battery, here are images from the charging troubleshooting flowchart from the service manual that may help.

One side of the image shows the zoomed in components' test points mentioned by the flowchart and the other shows the full board just to give an idea of their location.

Thanks for the information, and sorry for the late response! Unfortunately I'm just clueless at these things, so I've sort of given up and decided to take it to the technician someday soon. Yet I'd still love to know your opinions about a new "issue" that I've posted down there, on a response to oldturkey03!

@zwjna with everything you tired etc., you are not telling us if you changed the battery. "Recently I bought a universal charger to charge the battery, since it's removable." If this is still the original battery, or close to it, you do want to start with that.

Samsung Galaxy J7 Battery Replacement

After that, get yourself a USB ammeter and see how many amps your phone is actually trying to pull from the charger.

@oldturkey03 Indeed this is the original battery. It charges well with that universal charger, albeit very slowly. When I try to charge that battery thru the phone, normally, the phone says the battery is charging but it really isn't. Initially I thought it was the USB port, but after seeing that it works when connected to the computer (that is, I can transfer data between both devices) I got confused. One would say a normal charger will also take way too long to charge, just like the universal charger, since the battery is in bad state; but it didn't charged at all back then even after many hours connected to a normal charger. Will try again though the next time I have to charge it. And today I will go out and get one of those USB ammeters and try. Thanks for the answer!

@zwjna I still would replace the battery as well. Trust me, it is coming to its end :-)

@oldturkey03 I will, mate, regardless of what the problem is! I was hoping to have news for you guys by now, but I hadn't the time to do much. I just kept using the phone, waiting for the long charges with the universal charger. Worked just fine. I even factory reset it as suggested by another user, but that was no fix.

About half an hour ago I turned it off because I wanted to charge it so that tomorrow, maybe, I take it to the technician. Then I tried connecting a cable to see if it works all of a sudden. But after a short while, the big, square, green battery icon [1] turned red, and in the middle there was a white temperature icon, just like the one seen here [2]. I disconnected it immediately. I then connected it to a proper charger, but after a while it appeared again. I've searched a bit, and most people point to the port as the culprit. What do you think? Battery, port, something else?

@zwjna honestly start with the battery. Then the port. Go with the easier part first. It does have a temp sensor as well, so that would be consistent with what you already have going on here.

@oldturkey03 I will do that then. Thanks!
