iPhone SE 2020 restarts every 3 min - panic log "thermalmonitord..."

Hello,

I dropped my phone, thereafter it now restarts every 3 min.

Thanks to ifixit and use here, at least I now know that is due to the phone rebooting (not battery or others), problem

is even saved in the "panic log" (see attached). Apparently, "no successful checkins from thermalmonitord/nservice returned not alive with content : is_alive_func returned unhealthy ... Can anyone give me some more specifics on what to repair, possibly, which part to exchange? Many thanks!

Hi Marc,

Actually, the older panic logs do give indications of which sensor has failed; in your case the key is the missing sensor named 'mic1'. @flannelist has put together an excellent Wiki page on kernel panics and their causes, and here's what it has to say about yours:

Thanks to that information, I can say with confidence that replacing your lightning port flex cable assembly will almost certainly fix your issue. Here's the iFixit guide you'll need.

The assembly can be purchased right here on iFixit if you want to support their repair efforts; the same connector is used on both the iPhone 8 and your iPhone SE 2020. If your budget is tight you can also find the part on sites like Amazon, eBay and AliExpress.

I'd suggest the fix kit version; for an additional $5 USD you get all the tools needed to do the job plus the precut adhesive sheet so you can seal it back up again once you're done. To be proper you should get the color that corresponds to your phone, but in practice any color will work just fine.

@marc81800 I understand about the desire for it to be an easy fix like a loose connection, but that really doesn't happen on Apple phones. Every connector used is clamped down with a bracket and screws specifically to keep that from happening, and as a result we just never see loose connectors being an issue on an iPhone.

Other than that, the mic1 sensor is built into the flex cable so there's no connector for it specifically to try. The closest you can come is the big connector for the lightning port flex where it plugs into the motherboard. You're welcome to give it a try; it can't hurt but I don't honestly believe you'll find anything useful by doing so.

Here's the connector you'd want to try unplugging and plugging back in; it's right next to the battery connector.

Thanks much! Your help is highly appreciated.I will order a new lightning connector unit and replace the old one.

in the meantime.... is it possible that only connection / cable came lose (due to the drop) so I could try an "easy fix"? Possibly, any suggestions on where to look?

Hello Marc, did you manage to replace the lightening connector on your iPhone SE 2020? I need to also do this, but wanted positive feedback from someone who has already used the iFixit replacement part as I've read on other sites lots of issues of this part causing a 3min restart problem (which is what I have experienced also with a replacement part bought elsewhere)

Yup those thermal sensors can be a pain.

Big problem is there are multiple thermal sensors in an iPhone nowadays.

Providing the log is fantastic , and I can see the "thermalmonitord, no successful checkins in 204 seconds" issue but I couldn't see anything indicating which one. starting with iphone 13 they added an indicator so we could immediately know.

I usually suspect the battery thermal sensor first followed by the charging port sensor, since they are easier to replace. Other thermal sensors get more difficult to swap out.

Yes, as a matter of fact there are several questions posted here on iFixit where replacing the lightning port flex assembly fixed a kernel panic issue. I've replaced and fixed one on an iPhone X personally.

Are you finding otherwise? What specific panic log entries did you see?

Thanks Jerry! The symptom we have is the phone restarts after 2-3 minutes, with a thermal daemon log showing mic1 sensor failure. So it sounds like it's certainly worth a try to fix that. Haven't given it a try yet, thanks for the confirmation.

@techken11846 I think that's a good start. I will also mention the SE2020 has a known (and common) board level issue for this same sensor, but start with the charge port before jumping to that conclusion.

For me, replacing the Lightning connector fixed the problem. However, the replacement was very tedious , I have done other repairs before. After repair the phone would not re-start every 3 min. However, it would not charge anymore.... Liklely due to breaking some small connection (Taptic Engine?!; others have commented on that problem).

So one problem solved, created another one.
