Instead of using the heat mat, can I use a heat gun to take off the screen to get to the battery?

Yes you can. Apply heat around the edges then insert your opening tool freeing a bit of adhesive at a time. Then repeat until the screens off. Using some isopropyl alcohol as well will make the job a lot easier.

Do I need to use plastic picks? or can I use a spudger?
@nytryder26 I’d use a thin opening tool to make an opening then a thin piece of plastic. Plastic picks or a spudger might be too thick cracking the screen.
