Unable to enter recovery mode or booting pick, any quick fix?

Doing some software update on my 2011 MacBook Pro, it failed. However, it can not enter into those modes like recovery mood (command +R), booting picks (Option key), or pram reset, after software update, etc. it just simply go to regulate boot up instead. Any thoughts what could be wrong here? And how to fix it? Thanks.

If you can’t get into any of the Startup commands that’s not good. Review this Apple T/N Mac startup key combinations just to be sure.

You also stated the system does boot up, what is the macOS version you are running? Are you able to even use the system?

I’m just guessing here, is the real issue a failed keyboard? Go into the keyboard preferences keyboard viewer, are you able to click on the keyboard having the viewer show the give key was hit? Go through all the keys.

Let us know what you discover!

I’m running hi Sierra on it, and even upgrade it to Catalina, no problem (boot up and running). I tried with an apple usb wired keyboard also, no luck as well, unable to enter into those modes either. Is it due to firmware collapse during the software update? (All modes worked before doing software upgrade), any thoughts?

@lovecd - I’m more inclined to believe this is a messed up setting in the NVRAM. Are you able to see the keyboard viewer respond when you type on the keys?

But be for we try resetting did this system get liquid damaged at some point? I would take the bottom cover off and look for any discoloration along the back edge of the logic board area, there is a bare connector which is for system testing during the manufacturing. If it has corrosion that can mess things up. Take a picture and post it if you’re not sure.

@danj - Hi Dan, I’m not with laptop now, but look it up and take pictures once home today. However, I don’t recall there was any chance to have liquid damage on it, but will check for sure.

Thanks,

@danj - Hi Dan, just tried it, and I'm able to open the keyboard viewer and confirm that all keys on keyboard are responding, but not able to enter into those recovery mood at all including "command & option+R". Upon checking the board physically, I can't see any sign of liquid damage, please see pictures I took, any more thoughts?

Thanks,

@lovecd - Disable the firmware password is set. If not set, enable it and then after testing it disable again. Set a firmware password on your Mac

Did that help?
