What does the 2nd LAN port do?

Heya

I have an old home server I put together for a business's old tills and servers. It has a IBM FRU43W5050 motherboard and I was wondering what the 2nd LAN port is for. The label on the mobo says "SP LAN" And I can't seem to find out what it means. I can't seem to activate it via any windows setting either

@joshiey that is your Remote Supervisor Adapter port. Amongst other things it allows you to

  • Automatic notification and alerts
  • Automated Server Restart (ASR)
  • Continuous health monitoring and control v Domain Name System (DNS) server support
  • Enhanced user authority levels
  • Independent power, which enables around-the-clock access to the server even when the server power is off.

for all the information about that, download the installation guide from here

@oldturkey03 am I able to use it as a standard LAN port?

@joshiey nope. it is "wired" differently. Check the manual to see how to access it.

Depending on the systems age it was often used as a out of band management connection to help isolate the two data feeds.

Some servers used the dual connection for Web server connection sprayer so the internet connections where spread out to a bank of servers or a dual connected firewall.

When the connection was 100Gb to gain a bit more power we often bonded the 2 NICs together getting a 200Gb connection.
