MBP shuts off without power adapter. Battery has 5 charge cycles

I have a 2014 macbook pro that got to the point that it needed to be plugged in all the time, and also the keyboard and the trackpad were broken. I bought a replacement upper case from ifixit with a keyboard, trackpad and a battery already installed.

After installing the new top case assembly, I did the recommended battery calibration (full charge, use until empty, full charge) and everything seemed great until about 2 cycles later. I noticed that it was only charging to about 75%.

I reset the SMC, and tried draining and fully charging the battery. Again it stopped around 75% and now, when unplugged it dies after about 2 seconds (not instantly). I tried booting unplugged. It almost fully boots then shuts off. Over the last 3 days the charge percentage has crept up to 88%, but still dies when unplugged

ifixit has offered a replacement battery or a return/refund, but I'm wondering if it could be something else.

Weird update to the original post:

I did discover that I do have a knockoff charger. 2 years ago I unknowingly bought an amazon clone/fake. I watched some comparison videos and am pretty certain it's not a genuine Apple.

BUT, after a two weeks of the macbook shutting off any time the power was disconnected, it started working normally again. I've been running it alternatively off of the power adapter and battery for two days with no problems. It's currently charging at 62w. So we'll see. It's days are likely numbered. But maybe it's a software issue?

@cg4n6 - if the real Apple charger is working you are very lucky!

Get rid of the knockoff as you just don’t want to use it again.

There is no software issue here, just a confused SMC logic.

Resetting it like we did is all that was needed. You should be fine!

Let’s give this a try, disconnect the battery and with nothing plugged in press and hold the power button for a good 15secs to fully discharge the logic board. Now connect the MagSafe charger, the system should spontaneously boot up. Let it fully boot up, then do a proper shutdown. Reconnect the battery and with the charger plugged in restart the system. Give it a few minutes and check CoconutBattery again. What we want to see is the charging voltage is higher than what you posted when the battery is in need of charge like your image above and the MagSafe charger is Amber.

Yes, it did spontaneously restart when connecting the power with the battery disconnected, and after holding the power button for 15+ seconds.

@cg4n6 - Well not good the voltage comparator logic has been damaged on the logic board. A common cause is knockoff chargers which burn the limiter resistors. Here’s a good vid which explains the issue MacBook logic board not charging battery repair that Louis walks through.

Possible. Still odd that the battery seemed fine for the first few cycles. Always used OEM charger.
