Replaced rear glass, damaged flashlight and now front camera is black?

Hi All,

A few days ago I replaced the rear glass on my iphone 12 - it went relatively smoothly, but I managed to accidentally break the flashlight off during the replacement - the rear camera still works fine (without the light / flash of course) - but the front camera doesn't work at all anymore - is this because of the flash ? - If I replace the flashlight ribbon, is that likely to fix the front camera problem?

I don't know if it's something different - but face ID still works fine! - does that use the front camera or is that a different component again?

Thanks

Based on what I could find, it is unlikely this is due to the flash. The flash enable is often related to the camera’s presence, so it generally does not work if the rear camera is non working. But in my experience, the opposite isn’t true. And front facing camera is rarely in the mix, unless the issue is on the board side.

If you haven’t reseated any of the internal cable connections, that would be my first step. Next I would check the front facing camera cable for signs of damage.

Did you remove any of the internal components before replacing the back glass? What method did you you to get the existing glass out? Is Face ID working even though the camera is not? Sorry for all the questions, this issue just piqued my interest, hahaha.

Thanks for the reply!

The glass replacement was just peeling the existing glass off (with a heat gun and the usual tools to pick/lift pieces off). Everything seemed unharmed except for the flash, which I accidentally nudged as I was trying to get between the 2 camera lenses!

No dismantling was done - the screen hasn’t been off so I’m not sure how I’ve killed the front camera!

Face ID works fine - in fact, I’ve reset the phone today in the hope that might fix it - and in doing that it reset Face ID - I’ve now setup Face ID from scratch, you can’t see yourself when you set it up, but it works and recognises movements etc! I guess that must be a separate camera.

Yes, Face ID functionality is an amalgamation of a few different parts. And the front facing camera is actually not really necessary. Loathe as I am to say it. I think you’re going to have to actually get into the phone to diagnose this one. The 12 series is a bit of a bugger to get into. But if the issue is just the front face camera, rather than other components of Face ID, it should be replaceable on its own.
