Is regular double-sided tape ok to use for new battery?

Replacing the battery, can I use regular double-sided 3M scotch tape to reattach the speaker and battery for my MacBook Air?

Also, has anyone seen instructions for how to install the new battery and put everything back together, or does one simply go backwards from the disassembly instructions?

Hi Alex,

My personal vote would be no, don't use regular double-side tape. While it will get you through this repair and most likely be satisfactory for continued use of the machine, it'll be nothing but headaches the next time you need to remove the battery.

The stretchy Command-style adhesive is meant to be (fairly) easy to remove and is very sticky, so using a replacement that gives the same holding power will mean it'll be a major pain in the behind to get the battery out again.

With regard to reinstalling the battery, yes, virtually all of the guides on iFixit assume that the install procedure is simply the reverse of the removal, so you just follow the guide again in reverse order to put everything back the way it was.

Don't forget to follow the instructions in the final step to calibrate your new battery once it's installed. The one step that looks like it's missing from the guide is in putting the adhesive down for the new battery. The adhesive strips go on the battery itself, with the ends wrapped over the edge of the battery so you can get to them once the battery is in place. Dry fit it before remove the covers on the adhesive and make sure it's properly placed before you remove the plastic. Once you set it down, it's going to be stuck good, so be sure to line it up right before pressing it in place.

Best of luck with your repair!

Thanks so much, Jerry. Makes sense on following instructions in reverse order. I don't think my replacement batter came with adhesive tape and the one I took off the original battery is going to be impossible to reuse. So, I am stuck figuring out what to put under the new battery and the speakers, which had tape on them that I removed. What tape do you recommend I use in both those cases?

I see that many of the batteries for your MacBook online come with adhesive, but for some reason I'm not finding anybody who sells just the adhesive for your particular model.

If it was mine, I'd probably go on eBay and look up the battery adhesive for an iPhone Plus (+) model, like a 6 plus, or 7 plus; it's not vital to pin down an exact model; it's just that the plus batteries are bigger than the standard size ones so the adhesive strips will be longer.

You can get an order of four sets of adhesives, with three strips per set on Amazon for about $5 that should work fine.
