Laptop won't start, something possibly blown on it

Hey guys,

I have an Illegear Raven SE-R (Tongfang GK5CP0Z) and the laptop doesn't start anymore, the power light comes on for like a split second then goes off.

The thing is that the laptop still charges the battery just fine (battery light turns red when power is plugged in and yellow when the battery is fully charged), but the laptop won't start.

I have tried replacing the CPU, thinking that maybe I have a blown CPU, but the issue still persisted so... Yeah, turns out the issue is elsewhere.

I'm proficient at microsoldering, but I'm just not used to repairing laptops, and I'm wondering if some of you guys here could help me out.

if you have a multimeter check the 19v rail for a short, if its not short start checking random capacitors for shorts

@tech_ni if there's a short on the 19v rail, would the battery of the laptop not charge? genuine question.

I do have a multimeter, so I'll look into that.

@hamsteyr could still be short somewhere if the light goes out, maybe a gpu or cpu issue

That symptom usually points to a power rail or protection issue rather than the CPU, especially since charging still works. On Tongfang boards, a split-second power LED often means the EC is alive but the board is failing early power sequencing, commonly due to a shorted MOSFET, bad high-side/low-side pair, blown current sense resistor, or a short on the 19V or 5V/3.3V always-on rails. I would start by checking for shorts to ground on the main rails, verify +3VALW and +5VALW are present and stable, then see if Vcore or GPU rails try to come up before shutting down. Also inspect around the DC-in circuit and battery charging IC, since milk or past liquid damage can cause delayed corrosion even if charging still works. Given your microsoldering skills, this is very fixable, but it will take schematic-level probing rather than part swapping.

So what? If anything, that means it needs answering MORE urgently! Sure, it's unlikely that the original poster of this question will ever read this, but even so, there are questions on iFixit that are from over 10 years ago that are still getting answers and comments!
