Windows 11 update install error occuring (0x800f0831)

yay another new issue with this computer. I was trying to update my laptop, and I got an update error which is really confusing.

Block Image

I put this error code into google and it said that there were files missing or deleted. I clicked on a blog and followed some instructions to try get this issue resolved. the first step was to run some (dsim) checker and I did. everything was normal. then I ran /sfc checker and again everything was normal. then it told me to change my boot settings and try update. that did nothing so I put it back to normal. and finally I was told to go to a CBS.log after finding it I opened it and scanned the text for errors. I finally found some which was some file being missing.

Specify the EXACT commands and their results, also upload the whole D A M N log so people can look at it, not screenshot some irrelevant section that you think may help.

Tom, the screenshot is of the CBS log, found at C:\Windows\Logs\CBS. It is saying that the Windows update he is trying to install (KB5015814) failed because he did not install the previous update (KB5010690) first. My solution removes the update cache and runs an update troubleshooter native to Windows. It is a noninvasive first step that may fix the issue without getting too technical. If it doesn't work, we can dig deeper. Please be respectful.

@dancomptia Yeah for some reason I always saw these BATs as generic useless attempts, I do see the steps to create a new SoftwareDistribution database now.

da

@tomchai don't be rude thanks, I'd rather get help from someone who is respectful

Run some commands to troubleshoot the update problem.

  1. Open a command prompt as an administrator. Type CMD in your Windows search box, right-click the Command Prompt option from the list, and choose "Run as Administrator." Select "Yes" in the following popup box.
  2. Copy this code (as one big block) and paste it into the prompt. You must select the entire block "as is" for it to work.

net stop bits

net stop wuauserv

net stop cryptsvc

rename C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.bak

net start bits

net start wuauserv

net start cryptsvc

%systemroot%\system32\msdt.exe -id WindowsUpdateDiagnostic

shutdown /r /t 60

When the update troubleshooter appears, follow the prompts. When it completes, click "Close", and your computer will restart in 60 seconds.

After your PC restarts, try to update again.

@kakkywacky Since the code didn't work, please download and install the Acer Care Center. It's an app made by Acer that you can use to manage updates. The link is below:

Try this methods to fix this error-

Make sure that your device has enough space. Your device requires at least 16 GB of free space to upgrade a 32-bit OS, or 20 GB for a 64-bit OS. For more info, see Free up drive space in Windows.

Run Windows Update a few times. Download and install any available updates in Windows Update, including software updates, hardware updates, and some third-party drivers. Use the Windows Update Troubleshooter to fix Windows 11 Update errors.

Check third-party drivers and download any updates. You can find third-party drivers and installation instructions for any hardware you’ve added to your device on the manufacturer’s website.

Unplug extra hardware. Remove all external storage devices and drives, docks, and other hardware you might have plugged into your device that isn’t needed for basic functionality.

Check Device Manager for errors. In the search box on the taskbar, type device manager. Choose Device Manager from the results. In the window that pops up, look for any device with a yellow exclamation mark beside it (you may have to select each category to switch to the list of devices). Press and hold (or right-click) the device name and select either Update Driver Software or Uninstall to correct the errors.

Remove third-party security software. Make sure you know how to reinstall your programs and that any necessary product keys are on hand. Windows Defender will help protect your device in the meantime.

Repair hard-drive errors. In the search box on the taskbar, type command prompt. Choose Command Prompt from the list of results. In the window that pops up, type chkdsk/f C: and press the Enter key. Repairs automatically start on your hard drive, and you’ll be asked to restart your device.

Greeting,

Rachel Gomez
