Can the hinges be tightened?

My 2021 16" has a much lighter hinge than I'd like, and was wondering if they can be tightened in any way?

Hi

Yes they can but I believe this will void your warranty

If you follow this guide up til step 34

Sostituzione dello schermo del MacBook Pro 16" 2021

Once you get to that step don’t remove the screws just loosen them or tighten them to you what you like:-)

Hopefully this helps

Thanks:-)

Thanks for the reply! Just to confirm, the 3x screws on each side in step 34 will adjust the hinge "firmness"?

@tmtiz

Yes that’s correct

Loosen the screws for a looser hinge

Tighten the screws for a tighter/firmer hinge

If you need any help just ask me:-)

@tmtiz & @hellomacos - Sorry guy there is no adjustment for the hinges tension!

Apple uses a clutch design which is basically a tightly wound spring over a shaft. The only way to effect change is replacing the full display in this series as Apple did away with the discreet hinge units the 2015 and older systems use.

@danj

Thanks for the explanation:-)

I think I misunderstood what @tmtiz meant

When they said their mac had a lighter hinge I thought they meant it was loose

On the bright side, no longer need to open the laptops to fix it when they loosen too much but it also means $$$ repairs. :-(

@hellomacos - If the lid is was too tight you can apply a bit of oil onto the clutch but becareful! It's easy to go too far making it too loose! Then you need to use a cleaner to pull away the oil.

Given the age of the system it should be fixed by Apple.

@danj

I too think it should be fixed by apple as it’s as it’s not a very old machine

@hellomacos The generally accepted threshold is warranty=Apple, and if you have AC+, Apple. After that, DIY becomes more fair game. 5+ is DIY only as the Apple cost and parts availability favors it. 7-10 years is basically DIY only.

Like for example, I self maintain my 2014 rMBP to keep it going. I know I'm coming up to the point I need to upgrade, but it refuses to die. The 2014/15 is Apple's Toyota.
