Do you hear the feeder motor turn on to indicate its ready to accept documents? If not, there may be a sensor, motor or software malfunction requiring someone familiar with step by step diagnosis, troubleshooting and repairs if its worth repairing. As a diyer, you might find help on youtube or other forums related to HP Officejet products. HP may have forums too for disseminating info.

First, let me thank you very much for your reply to my question. Second, I had forgotten that I had asked the question, so I am sincerely grateful that I ran across it again. I am Michael Williams; aka @maadi mike. With that being said I will answer your f/u question from your reply. ~ Yes, I hear the feeder motor turn on and roll indicating it is ready to accept documents. It just will not pick the document up. I appears to try and pick up the paper it just doesnt'. I don't believe it is a sensor, motor or software malfunction. I believe that it is either a roller or gear. Any assistance you can offer will be gratefully appreciated. I have been searching all over the web looking for solutions including HP and have not found anything except for one YouTube video but it was difficult to follow and what I surmised from the video is that it ultimately resulted in a "gear", which was easily replaced and the printer worked fine after correcting the malfunctioning gear. Once again, thank you!

Clean the pickup roller

  • Unplug the power cord from the product, and then remove the pickup roller.
  • Dab a lint-free cloth in isopropyl alcohol (electronic parts shops usually sell this), and then scrub the roller.
  • Using a dry, lint-free cloth, wipe the pickup roller to remove loosened dirt.

HP have a video on their web site.

Thank you very much for your reply to my question, by chance do you know what the title of the video is on either the HP Support site or YouTube? Thank you again. Note: The reason I am asking, I did a search using the title of this Post and J3680 and didn't come up with a good response. Thanks...

@maadi_mike No idea. It was just a general video for any number of model.

Here's one:

You just want access to the paper feed area and the rollers. It is really just a generic sort of operation. Printer wise you printer would be considered an antique so exact documentation may be hard to find.

Take your time. Remember in troubleshooting the main action is doing nothing but looking and thinking slowly.
