the system powers up with one red light and the video output to the monitor is grey with white letters telling me about error code "E47" will the red ring of death kit fix this or do i need to try something else?

From what I gather this is a problem with the Graphics chip on the main board. The e47 error is identified by one flashing red light The one flashing red light indicates there is this problem with the GPU, possibly caused by cold solder joints. The RROD fix my work for a while, the other thing you could try is to reflow your board. Hope this helps, good luck.

My machine had red flashing light in the bottom right - E47 error appeared on screen
Most online suggestions were to unplug all power cables and harddrive and reconnect - did this a bunch of times and issue persisted.
Bought the X-Clamp kit off eBay for a few quid and replaced them on my machine - after a few re-boots it now works perfectly fine. not sure it's a permanent fix tho.
IF you're yet to take the machine apart you may qualify for the E47 warranty extension from Microsoft, double check that first. If not try XClamp fix, worst comes to worst you're still gonna have a broken xbox :P
