All external interference (IC chips in USB) still can't go faster than 500Mbs and most likely 150Mbs using 3.1 or 3.2.and don't believe manufacture than can run 1000Gbs or more may be in 5 or 10 years

This is faster than my S**t, I would not be complaining.

I have the same issue. My Samsung portable x5 Ssd clocks in at 2000+ MB/s but my sandisk extreme pro using the same cable and port only clocks in at 950 max

There has been quite a few reports of slower USB-C native external drive performance, but much better Thunderbolt3 performance!

There is a sizable I/O difference between the two USB-C connections! A Thunderbolt3 cable is capable of transferring up to 40 gigabytes of data per second, which is twice the maximum data transfer speed of USB-C. However, in order to hit these data transfer speeds, you must use a Thunderbolt cable with a Thunderbolt port, and not a USB-C port, and lastly the device must be a Thunderbolt drive.

so is that mean I cannot use full potential of 2000 MBps if I use this ssd?

The only way to have maximum speed is to change the external ssd to thunderbolt based, is it correct?

@handytjoa - At this point I think this is the best solution:

Here's a bit more on what I would do How to Build the FASTEST Portable SSD for LESS $$$! and here's the update BEST DIY SSD: Why you Should BUILD instead of BUY!

I too have a Sandisk Extreme Pro 2TB advertised as 2000mbs. Upon running it on my iMac 2020 via the thunderbolt 3 socket, I’m only receiving 950mbs on Blackmagic. This is with both the supplied cables. I was expecting full speed. The internal SSD in the iMac has reading of 2500mbs but only 512GB in size.

Maybe a thunderbolt 3 cable may do the trick instead of the supplied cables.

@Nazrul Hussain - There is a wiring difference between the two cables!

The issue is lanes of connection. An early USB-C cable often don't have all of the pins wired up as the extras where intended for later enhancement. When Apple jumped to using the USB-C connector for Thunderbolt-3 things got messy!

When I was in school many decades ago... We used Zip Lamp cord wire to hookup our speakers to our HiFi's to get better performance! But it was a pain in connecting so we used AC power connectors! I had taken the speakers for the week end and my new room mate moved in and plugged the exposed plug end into the AC power outlet! BANG went the HiFi in a puff of smoke!

So as you can see either the connector or even the cable doesn't set the use! It was a quiet year ;-{ At lease here we don't face a dire consequence!

Don't forget the highway doesn't set what the car can run on it! USB-C connections are no different some drives can't use the full ability of the channel and reading is always faster than writing to the drive and the fullness also effects performance as the house cleaning tasks may not have had time to run to flush the still populated cells.
