Power turns on then off

When I turn my game boy on, the power comes on for a second and then shuts off. When I plug the charger cord in the green light comes on for a second and then shuts off.

Had this same problem with 3 SP’s I picked up. It’s not likely a big issue at all so don’t worry. It means you need a new battery. Luckily nintendo made it really easy. All you need to do is buy a replacement, you can get cheap ones from amazon that’ll do the trick. Though before you buy the new battery, check the back of your console, you’ll see the battery compartment held in with a phillips screw. It’s better if you can open it and take the old battery out to check, but even if you can’t at least check for any bumps/ a bulge in the plastic. If there is a slight bulge in the plastic around the battery compartment, this means the battery is starting to expand, and it can damage your gameboy if left unchecked. Best of luck! (by the way most batteries for it come with a little screwdriver so don’t worry if you don’t have the right size)

New battery didn’t work. It still shuts off immediately.

@nardbarber If the battery replacement didn't work then maybe it could be a problem with the power switch, which is a lot more difficult to fix than a battery replacement but shouldn't be too bad. If that is the problem, you might not even need to replace it, could just need a bit of a clean.

The most common cause is the F1 or F2 fuse.

i find its more often bad contacts. no reason not to check fuses first. this happens a lot on later models when the screen ribbon is loose or dirty. it is very common for gba-sp to have a dirty screen ribbon or port. electrosolve contact cleaner works for me most of the time. the almost equal culprit is the power switch itself. the copper contact requires cleaning. electrosolve usually does the trick but realistically or just as often removing the shielding and wiping (careful not to bend) the copper contacts with eraser is required. (or replacement.)
